In this section you will learn basic video editing concepts and terms, how to navigate DaVinci Resolve, and how to import your previously recorded video introduction and university video bumper.
Before we dive into DaVinci Resolve, it’s important that you understand some basic video editing concepts and terms.
Media: Media includes videos, graphics or images. Your media will be your previously recorded introduction video and the university video bumper.
Video Bumper: A video bumper or bumper is a short clip that describes or depicts a company’s brand or logo. You should have saved the University of Skaro bumper on your computer. The bumper will ensure consistent branding across all online courses.
Trim: Trimming is removing a portion of the beginning or end of a video. You may need to trim your video for length or clarity.
Cut: Cuts split video clips into sections. You may need to cut and remove sections of your video for length and clarity.
Crossfade: A crossfade is a transition between media that involves one media fading into another. You’ll learn how to insert a crossfade into your video to meet the University of Skaro’s criteria.
Next, we’ll take a look at DaVinci Resolve and learn about the tools you’ll be using to edit your video. Here is a screenshot of the DaVinci Resolve Edit Page labeled with the tools you’ll be using.
Media Pool
The Media Pool is where your imported media including your previously recorded introduction video and the University of Skaro video bumper. You’ll move your media from the Media Pool into the Timeline to edit your video.
Location: Left side of Edit Page
Timeline
The Timeline is where you’ll manipulate media and effects to create your video.
Location: Bottom of the Edit Page
Source Viewer
The Source Viewer shows media as it’s selected in the Media Pool.
Location: Top left video window above the Timeline.
Timeline Viewer
The Timeline Viewer shows the content of the video as it is edited in the Timeline.
Location: Top right video window
Toolbox
The Toolbox has all of the video editing tools. You’ll be using the Effects and Titles within the Toolbox.
Location: Left of the Timeline
Inspector Tab
The Inspector Tab allows you to make adjustments to your video, like scale or text location on the screen.

Now that you’re familiar with the basics, let’s start with importing the videos you’ll need into DaVinci Resolve. You should have the following videos saved:
The University of Skaro video bumper
Your previously recorded introduction video.
