Abstract
Vaginitis, which includes bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and candida vaginitis, is the most common reason for gynecological visits in the US. Though it is common, problems with treatment still arise. Antibiotic resistance, lack of standard procedures, and general discomfort are issues that patients may face. Gels, creams, and suppositories can be messy, do not provide long-term treatment, and may be uncomfortable to insert vaginally for some women. Given the limitations of current treatments, there is a need for a transvaginal device that can deliver treatment as minimally invasive as possible. The concept this team will pursue is formulating a hydrogel with pH stabilizers that may be released over a standard period of time in an implantable device with comfortable vaginal insertion. A drug release model will mathematically assist in finding the therapeutic dose and time needed. The insertion device will be soft, and the minimum size needed for drug release. The model of the device is set to be smaller than traditional suppository and tampon like designs, to ensure the insertion does not feel invasive. The global women’s health market is estimated to reach 47.8 billion USD by 2027 with a CAGR of 4.9%. Current research supporting improved hydrogel therapy for vaginitis and existing models of insertion devices allow this device to be feasibly developed, combining current technology with new developments to make an improved and efficient device.
