4 Steps of DEIB Practice

Here are the 4 steps of the DEIB practice that I developed. From the toolkit page, you can download several worksheets to experience some of the steps.

1

Understand the structure of intersectionality and privilege.

Hierarchical structures created over long histories are also embedded within every category, to the crosscutting detriment of all. It is hard to see to those in positions of power and privilege within the hierarchy. Intersectionality and rightlessness provide clues to a better understanding of this step.

2

Identify patterns and roots of emotions in yourself and others.

If you have a brain, you have emotions. Every single person has emotions. Emotions are messages and energy. Treat emotions as a resource and reflect to episodes of strong anger, despair, joy and a sense of belonging, and see patterns and discover their roots. Often the roots can be found in society.

3

Share your narrative, solidify with others.

Emotions are universal and cross borders. Emotions are also contagious. Once you have discovered your emotions, patterns and roots in the Step 1 & 2, you must first connect with them. Although events and interpretations are often expressed differently by different people, emotions allow people to empathize with each other (Stuber). Share your stories and emotional narratives, let us solidify with each others.

4

Find your stance & voice, and take action.

Once you have connected with yourself and found your friends through steps 1-3, simply find your stance and voice and take action. Become an ally of an activist you agree with, become a donor or volunteer for an activity you support for, increase your knowledge about something you care about, challenge yourself to dialogue about it with others if you are not too uncomfortable. Let's take even the smallest step.
