The Smartphone Dilemma – and how to solve it
Got friends who are on the fence about kids and smartphones? This film is for them.
We’ve teamed up with Anish, a former Facebook engineer turned SFC advocate, to create our very first explainer video – a deep, eye-opening look at the dilemma facing today’s parents. (2025)
Saying YES to a smartphone?
Say YES with smart limits.
Don’t hand your child a fully loaded phone. Start smart.
Here’s how to set healthy boundaries from the start:
Block the browser
Kids in elementary & middle school don’t need full internet access. Period.
Control the downloads
Set permissions so your child can't download apps without your OK. You’re the gatekeeper—research every app first.
Delay social media
Wait until at least age 16. The later, the better.
Set screen time limits
Don’t want 4 hours a day of scrolling? Use built-in tools like Screen Time to set clear daily limits.
Ban phones from the bedroom
Experts across the board agree: phones + bedtime = bad combo.
80% of kids sleep with their phones—and many check them all night. This hurts sleep, mental health, and increases risky behavior (yes, even sexting).
