Our Mission:

ASM's K-12 Learning Support Team facilitates the academic, social, and emotional development of our diverse student population. With a focus on establishing a sense of belonging, we use Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to maximize student potential.

The Learning Support program in the American School of Madrid’s Upper School provides support to students with diagnosed learning needs and students who demonstrate a need for support to overcome a specific barrier to learning.

Students may be eligible for testing accommodations based on their barrier/s to learning; ASM testing accommodation guidelines are established by the International Baccalaureate but may in some cases be determined by ASM.

Those students who elect to enroll in the Learning Support program's pass/fail elective course, Resource, will receive an Individualized Learning Plan which describes their strengths, areas for growth, and establishes yearly goals. For students who need minimal support, Accommodation Plans are written to provide teachers a better understanding of appropriate ways to support the student.

Upper School is a time for students to prepare for post-secondary living, learning, and working; as a result, students can expect to develop self-awareness and acceptance, improve self-advocacy, and improve their executive functioning skills.

Services offered to students by the department include, but are not limited to:

  • Working relationship with multiple educational psychologists in the Comunidad de Madrid

  • Testing accommodations for ASM, IB, and College Board exams (e.g. extended time, alternate setting)

  • Access to assistive technology

  • Cognitive training software

  • Small group resource room

  • Short term interventions

  • Screening tools, evaluative testing, and diagnostic surveys
