SST: What Is A Student Support Team

Student Support Teams (SST) adopt a positive, team-oriented approach in addressing a wide range of student concerns related to school performance and overall experience. The purpose of the SST is to identify and intervene early in order to design a support system for students who are having difficulties in their classes. During this process, a referral for a psychoeducational evaluation may be recommended if it is suspected there may be specific barriers to learning such as specific cognitive deficits, learning difficulties, or mental illness

Staff members, parents, and students can all play a vital role in the aforementioned intervention process. Special education teachers also participate to give their perspective. The SST meeting provides everyone with an opportunity to share perspectives, so an appropriate intervention plan can be developed.

Follow-up meetings are scheduled to ensure that the plan is working and to make adjustments to ensure student success. A Student Support Team is an efficient and effective way to bring together all resources in the best interest of helping students reach their potential.
