In mid-March, 2022, the Upper School sponsored Neurodiversity Week as a way to celebrate individuals who think, learn, and see the world differently than most people. Neurodivergent individuals, such as those who have ADHD, dyslexia, poor memory, or mental health disorders, often feel a stigma surrounding their differences. Neurodiversity Week provides an opportunity to address this stigma and begin to make everyone in the ASM community feel accepted and supported regardless of their differences.
In the fall of 2021, 12th grader Sofia Politte created and ran a workshop intended to increase awareness of barriers to learning. She shared her personal experiences in an attempt to increase the awareness and address the stigma around students in need of support services. The five individual workshops were attended by teachers, parents, and students, and they served as the inspiration for ASM's Neurodiversity Week in 2022.
