Slideshow going through the PPDAC cycle and the requirements for each part (PPT)
Multivariate Data - detailed notes for each section of the PPDAC cycle (PDF) NOTE: We are no longer using NZGrapher. We will be using iNZight lite instead.
Multivariate Data Information Summary - a really nice one page summary of what is required at each stage of the PPDAC cycle
Writing Comparative Inquiry Questions Notes (PDF)
Hows my Questions? Activity (PDF) - a chance to look at some different examples of questions and check that they are in an appropriate format. Can you identify the variable, groups and population?
Problem and Plan Practice Activity (PDF) - an example for ballwear spending with a chance for you to try yourself with the marathon data
Problem and Plan Practice Activity (PDF) - an example for ballwear spending with a chance for you to try yourself with the marathon data (same as in Planning section)
You will be using iNZight Lite to produce your displays. Here is an exercise going through the steps to produce box and whisker plots and dot plots.
Data sets you may wish to explore (click on the link and it will load the data in iNZight): Note: For this unit, you need to pick one Quantitative variable (the measurement we will use to compare) and one Qualitative variable (the groups that we will compare). For example, height (Quantitative) and Year level (Qualitative).
Additional information for The Hungry Planet investigation:
Peter Menzel Photography - photos from the book The Hungry Planet
Video - some families from around the world featured in The Hungry Planet, revealing what they eat during the course of one week and the amount spent
Data cleaning (DOC) - an explanation of what it is and why we might use it
Activity: Pick one of the datasets above, create your box and whisker plots and write the Investigative question for it.
Raw Data Sets to look at or practice with:
Level 1 Multivariate Workbook - ANALYSIS Workbook (DOC) - this is a really informative workbook which has notes and exercises which will help you to be able to complete the analysis of a multivariate data investigation. It starts by identifying and explaining the features you need to be able to comment on and ends with graphs/data you can practice with.
Analysising and Commenting on Graphical Output Using OSEM Video (YouTube)
Features of Data - Dot Plots/Histograms (PDF) Notes - this doc explains the features of data which we comment on in the analysis of a multivariate data investigation.
Features of Data - Box Plots Notes (PDF) - this doc explains the features of data which we comment on in the analysis of a multivariate data investigation.
Roller Coaster Analysis Exemplar (PDF) - broken down into sections with some focusing questions a examples
Roller Coaster - Analysis Exemplar Video (screencastify) ~5mins
Footlength Activity to complete Activity (DOC)
Conclusion Notes (PDF) - this document goes through in detail what needs to be included in the conclusion - it is not just making the call!)
Making the Call at L1 Notes (DOC) - this document shows different combinations of box and whisker plots for group A and group B. It describes how you know what call can be made using the 3/4 - 1/2 rule
Making the Call Practice Exemplar (PDF) - this document has some examples of different examples of making the call using real data with one that you can practice and check your understanding with. You can also check if the investigative questions are right!
Making the call practice (VIDEO)
Making the call (DBM / OVS) Video (YouTube) - this method might be used if you are not confident with the call made using the 3/4 - 1/2 rule
Making the Call using the DBM / OVS Notes(PDF) - this method might be used if you are not confident with the call made using the 3/4 - 1/2 rule
Sampling Variabilty Notes (PPT) - these slides visually demonstrate sampling variability and the effect of sample size. This is important to consider when we make the call.
A mix of A/M/E exemplar - use the generic mark schedule see what grade they are!!
