Health Insurance

Requirements:

All international students enrolled at Ashland University are required to enroll in the Ashland University Student Insurance Plan. Ashland University will no longer accept another country’s insurance as a substitute; therefore, the Ashland University health insurance cannot be waived. Complete insurance coverage information is available at www.studentplanscenter.com

Students in the ACCESS (ESL) program are billed on a per-term basis; billing is handled in the ACCESS office. Undergraduate and Graduate students are automatically enrolled in the University’s insurance program, and the cost will be billed during September (or January if you start in the Spring Semester). Please contact the Business Office for details of coverage and cost.

All students are to collect their insurance card in the Business Office.

In addition to the health insurance requirement, all international students are required to complete the Ashland University Student Health History and Physical Form and provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella. Screening for tuberculosis will be performed once students arrive on campus.

How Insurance Works in the United States:

As important as health insurance is, it is also important to understand that most insurances do not automatically cover all of your medical expenses. The student insurance plan has a deductible and co-pay requirement. These are costs that you are required to pay before your insurance begins to pay benefits. You will be provided with instructions for reporting and documenting medical expenses (filing a claim). Generally, after you have paid the deductible portion, the insurance company pays a percentage of the total medical expenses, often 80 percent. The remaining amount (co-payment) is your responsibility.

*The Student Health Center is available to answer insurance questions/concerns and to assist with completion of health insurance claims.
