New International Student Checklist

When new students arrive in Ashland it can be difficult to remember all of the tasks that need to be addressed. This checklist is meant to serve as suggestions for students while adjusting to everyday life.

1. Settling In:

  • Secure permanent on or off-campus housing.
  • Open a bank account.
  • Get a cell phone.
  • Get an Eagle Card from the Eagle Office (located in Lower Convo or student dining).
  • Apply for a parking permit if you will own a car and need to park on campus.
  • If you have children, enroll your children in a local school or daycare if needed.

2. Reporting to the University:

  • Attend the ISS International Student Orientation (Mandatory).
  • Take the English Placement Exam. (Only for ACCESS students).
  • Undergraduate students- Attend Orientation Weekend.
  • Graduate/Professional students- Contact your department for orientation and advising sessions.
  • Follow instructions from the Health and Counseling Center for reporting vaccinations.

3. Preparing for Life at AU:

  • Undergraduates should review their schedule, and graduate students should register for classes as needed.
  • Purchase your textbooks at the campus bookstore in the Student Center or through an online vendor.
  • Pay the AU health insurance fee and arrange coverage for any dependents with you in the United States.
  • Meet with ISS if you have a job offer for on campus employment. (Employment Meetings weekly for the first few weeks of classes.)
