Battle Of The Books is a voluntary AkASL reading program which is endorsed by the Anchorage School District. Students in grades 3-4, 5-6 and MS, HS read specific titles and answer questions about the books. "Battles" are held at the school, district, and state levels. At Fire Lake, I also run a 'mock' battle for my 2nd graders who'd like to READ for the fun of it.
Synopses for the Battle of the Books titles are available for review digitally from links above, and by request with book orders. Everyone is eligible to read the books in their grade level band, but to officially participate in the program and checkout these books, students must have a permission slip on file with their building coaches; Mrs. Best, Mrs Pierce and myself. Interested students in 3rd thru 6th can download the required reading lists and synopses for their grade level at websites above, or ask Mrs. Sherburne for a paper copy.
Background: What is the Battle of the Books? The Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan reading motivational and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension and promote academic excellence.
Students who wish to compete can read and discuss the books, quiz each other on the contents, practice on Kahoots and then compete in teams to correctly answer questions based on the BOB books. Questions always begin with the words "in which book..." and the answer is a title/author from the list (example: Dog Diaries by Betsy Byars). Teams participate at the school level, and the Fire Lake winners will be able to compete at the ASD Tournament(s).
