Hawk Highlights

Message from your Principal:

Dear Hanshew Families,

Welcome to a new school year at Hanshew Middle School. We are off to a great start as schedules are settling and students are learning how to open lockers.

Just a reminder, masks are required for everybody in the school. Please send your student with masks to wear each day. Also, please come to Open House on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 from 6:00-8:00pm to meet the teachers and staff. Please follow your student's schedule and also wear a mask.

Hawk highlights will be sent out each month, but you can also find updated information for sports and activities on the Hanshew website as asdk12.org/hanshew.

As always, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lakhita Hodge

Hanshew Middle School Principal

AP Updates

Welcome to Hanshew!

It has been wonderful seeing students in the halls and in their classrooms. Thank you for having a wonderful start to the new year!

Students who are tardy to class will receive lunch detention. When students are late they miss vital class information. Let's get to class on time. Most students are doing GREAT!! Thank you!!

Please see the Hanshew Student Handbook for more details.

Student Drop-off/Pick-up

Please remember to keep the flow of traffic moving and give buses the right away when possible. Please remind your student to be cautious and keep their eyes alert as they navigate traffic areas.

Fall Sports

We have over 50 Hanshew Students involved in our Girls Basketball, Baseball, and Cross Country Running Fall Sports. This is great. It is not too late to sign up for Volleyball and Wrestling which starts in October. Paperwork can be picked up at the school or online at Middle School Sport Participation Forms . You can pay online at Parent Connect.

Library news

The library is up and operating fully! Open check-out is all day, so stop in and check out some books!

PLEASE return any books you may still have from the 2019-20 or 2020-21 school years. Books and textbooks from other schools can also be returned to Hanshew, and Mrs. Berg will get them back to their home school.

If your student has lost or damaged a book, the best option is to replace the book with a new or gently used copy of it (Title Wave is a great place to check). You can also pay for the replacement cost. Fine slips will be going out next week for the few remaining Hanshew books still out there.

The library will be open at lunch beginning August 30. Students MUST have a library lunch pass to attend. Battle of the Books will start mid-October.

Migrant Education

Welcome back!

To receive services from my office, you first need to be qualified.

If you did subsistence for an economic impact, you might receive school supplies, books, tutoring and emergency help from my glass corner office in the Library.

About a quarter of students lost qualifications over this past summer and another half might lose it by next year if we do not get state recognition of the dates you were away from Anchorage.

You can share with me the days you were away or mail back the calendars, but the new preferred way is to enter the information on your CampBrain Account (I apologize to those whose calendars were lost in the mail last year):

NJHS (National Junior Honor Society)

Congratulations to the students who have been accepted into NJHS for their 8th grade year! By earning at least a 3.5 GPA and sending in their applications, these students have earned their way into this great organization.

Meetings for NJHS will begin in late September with Mrs. Berg & Ms. Franklin. Students should listen for morning announcements regarding meetings.
