Our math day will begin at 8:35 and go until 9:50. This is precious time in our classroom, and we will use every moment of it. Please help your child get to school on time and ready to go with their materials.
Our general math routine will consist of the four routines below.
Practice & Warm Up
Practice will be a review of math facts and other important concepts.
Warm ups get us back into our math brains, review concepts and prepare us for the lesson.
Instructional Activities
Lessons consist of a sequence of 1–3 instructional activities. The activities are the heart of the mathematical experience and make up the majority of the time spent in class.
Lesson Synthesis
Synthesis assists with ways to help students incorporate new insights gained during the activities into the big-picture understanding.
Cool Down & Homework
Cool downs are quick exit tickets at the end of each lesson to help assess understand of the new ideas.
Homework will be assigned most days. We will have time to work on it in class.
Homework
Math homework will be assigned on most days, except test days. Homework is due at the beginning of class the following day. In IM Math 6, explaining your thinking is a large component and part of the expected homework routine.
While homework is due the next day, I will accept late homework for up to two weeks after it is due. I also accept corrections to homework in that same timeline.
Students are responsible for completing homework when they are absent. Homework help for lessons missed due to an absence can be found in the videos HERE.
Assessments
Assessments will be ongoing through each unit. There will be daily formative assessments designed to provide me with feedback and to help plan instruction.
There are also summative assessments or tests. A checkpoint every 3-5 lessons will assess students on each new section in the unit. There will also be end-of-unit assessments and, in longer units, mid-unit assessments.
Homework, Quiz, and Test Corrections:
I accept corrections on homework, quizzes, and tests. Corrections for homework and quizzes should be done on a separate piece of paper and stapled to the original homework. Only incorrect problems need to be redone. Homework and quiz corrections are accepted for full credit when done, showing full work and any necessary explanations. Corrections can be completed at home or in class. Please also feel free to assist with these corrections. For homework, watching the videos available on THIS page may be helpful. The teacher goes through the answers.
Test corrections are accepted for 1/2 credit. They can be done on THIS correction paper, or any paper if done in this way. Test corrections are done only for problems missed. Problems must be completely redone, explained, and the mistake must be noted (careless, computational, or conceptual). Corrections should be stapled to the original test. Corrections can be done at home, during in-class work time, or during lunch math club. Please feel free to assist with test corrections. At the test correction point, it is time to lend a hand and advice. Corrections are accepted for two weeks after the test.
