TEAM UPDATES - SCROLL DOWN TO FIND YOUR TEAM
We have had quite a few parents sign up as Canvas Observers! This is a useful tool for helping your student stay on track - you can monitor past and upcoming assignments as well as grades. Here is the link if you would like to sign up: ASD Parent Observer
Science (Weingartner) - We have been studying chemical elements and reactions in science. You can stay on top of your assignments by checking your grades and To-Do List in Canvas. It’s like a built-in planner! Don’t forget about the extra credit opportunity “Elements At Home”, due by the end of 1st quarter.
Math (McKenzie) - In Math 8 students are reviewing graphing in the coordinate plane. Algebra 1 students are working on a unit covering the fundamentals of algebra. And the geometry class is going to be learning about geometric transformations.
Math (Riordan) - Math 8 Graphing in the coordinate plane, Coordinates, Rotation, Translation, Reflection.
Social Studies (Dyer) - Students are beginning to create Padlet Maps for current events and using Padlet to share Good Things to start class. In 7th Grade Geography we are using the 5 Themes of Geography to describe locations. In 8th Grade U.S. History, we are studying the formation of European colonies in the Americas and the changes that occurred due to colonization.
Language Arts (Thompson) - The theme of Unit One in the SpringBoard curriculum is the Challenge of Heroism. We are learning about the archetypes of the Hero’s Journey. We are studying many different examples using books, film, and folklore.
Dear Team Revelation Students,
As this quarter comes to an end, we would like to thank you for your hard work, the great conversations, and your flexibility in adapting to the changes of middle school.
Language Arts (Franklin):
We will end the 1st quarter writing a personal narrative based on a choice a student has made themselves. For this writing, we will work through the writing process. We have already brainstormed ideas and next, we will organize our thoughts and write the first draft. Students will then work with a writing group to help with editing and revising.
Language Arts (Bondarenko):
We are finishing Unit 1 which focuses on the power of great ideas. In class we read three stories: Hitching a Ride, LAFFF, and Kids Are Inventors, Too and discussed how new ideas can lead to amazing inventions. We are also learning the following skills to help us become better readers and writers: use word parts, plan your reading, analyze stories, and write a personal narrative using complete sentences. Students published their work in the Language Arts Portfolio using https://www.storyjumper.com/user/login
In October we’ll start Unit 2 with the focus on the theme of Play to Your Strengths, and analyzes of characters, settings, and plot. Students can access all curriculum materials at this link: https://ngconnect.asdk12.org
Math (King):
I am impressed with students' prerequisite skills for ratios. Students are working very diligently to understand proportional relationships. Students in 3rd and 4th periods are participating in Mrs. King’s research project titled “Integrating Technology with the Arithmetic Operations on Fractions in Seventh Grade.” They are doing a wonderful job. Pre-Algebra is tackling solving two-step equations.
Science News (Roseberry):
We have just started our study of Classifying and Exploring Life. The Lesson’s key concepts include: What characteristics do all living things share? What methods are used to classify living things into groups? Why does every species have a scientific name? Students have been assigned reading and other practice and learning activities to make them more acquainted with this topic. Students will be participating in labs associated with these topics.
Social Studies (Stewart):
In Social Studies we have learned about climate zones, climate change, and the regions of the world. We have worked on writing skills and comparing and contrasting. Students will have a test on Unit 2 October 4th. Students will begin the Alaska Unit. The Alaska Unit will take them into the 2nd quarter. In the upcoming Alaska unit, students will learn about the 5 regions of Alaska, the various cultures in Alaska, Alaska’s physical features, and Alaska’s demographics. The Alaska unit will consist of reading material, videos, peardeck, and nearpod activities about Alaska. The Alaska unit will end with a project in which the students develop a tourism campaign.
Math (Swabb-Johnson)
In math class, we are learning about prerequisite skills adding and subtracting. I’m finding that most of the students have great strategies in knowing how to find the sum and difference in many of the presented problems. I feel that they are going to do well in this new unit.
Social Studies (Petrash):
The Constitution! That has been the focus in Mr. Petrash’s class in recent weeks. We will finish up the Bill of Rights in early October and then conclude the 5 Themes of Geography Unit (and graphic organizer). Before October is complete, we will have started the Alaska Geography Unit. Also, we will be keeping an eye on CURRENT EVENTS - especially the US Economy, the US elections, and Russia!
Language Arts (Lake):
Hi! It’s hard to believe we are almost done with 1st Quarter already! We will round out the quarter with finishing our poetry analysis and then focusing on the elements of and starting to compose a personal narrative. Please check Canvas Announcements for what we do daily, if you’re absent. As always, please feel free to email me through Canvas Inbox or ASD’s email with any questions. Best regards, Mrs. Noel Lake
Math (Priest):
Welcome to Math 7 and Pre-Algebra! So far this quarter we have done a lot of review with some new material mixed in. In math 7, we will finish integer, decimal, and fraction operations and transition to one step equations.
Pre-Algebra has started basic algebra and diving deeper into multi-step equations. Next up we will be solving inequalities!
Team Wolverine Peak students should plan to bring the following items to all core classes:
3-ring binder with tabs for each class
Lined paper
Pencil
Charged Chromebook
Planner (once issued)
In Mrs. Whitesell’s Social Studies class, we finished our study of early European explorers, Spanish conquistadors, and the Columbian Exchange. This has set the stage for our dive into the thirteen colonies and competition to control the new territories in the Americas. Students will be able to identify all thirteen colonies, their regional differences, and be able to discuss their failures and successes.
In Mr. Gumlickpuk’s Math 8 class, students will begin to learn about geometry and rigid transformations on a coordinate plane. In addition, students will begin to identify congruent shapes and similar shapes.
In Algebra, students will also be exploring algebraic ideas. They will learn about distributive property, combining like terms, and properties of equality in order to be able to solve any algebraic expression.
In School Business Partnership, students will learn more about our school business partners within the Hanshew community. In addition, they will learn more about careers and post secondary education and trade school.
In Mrs. Giraldo’s ELA class, students continue exploring the Hero’s Journey across various cultures, both ancient and modern. They’re learning the literary terms archetype, pacing, mood, and epic, among others; they’re analyzing stories for structure and narrative techniques. For the first quarter’s assessment, they will write their own hero narrative.
Mr. Mittelstadt’s Science is going on to our second unit of the quarter, the world of Chemistry. We will be exploring what a chemical reaction is and the possible evidence for a reaction. Safety goggle are mandatory! Sorry I missed you at Open House. The Virus had other plans for me that week! Please email with any questions or concerns.
Hello Hanshew Families,
Students will be participating in inside and outside activities so please dress for the weather but remember students should still have the required Hanshew PE shirt under the sweat suite or coat.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The celebration begins in the middle rather than the start of September because it coincides with national independence days in several Latin American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate theirs on Sept. 15, followed by Mexico on Sept. 16, Chile on Sept. 18 and Belize on Sept. 21.

We, Mr. Korniczky (Applied Tech) and Mr. Bushey (Computer Science), are refocusing our efforts on what Career and Technical Education is all about. We are here to prepare students for a career in the future.
The mission statement of ASD is "We are a community working cooperatively to educate children for life." We both strongly agree that job readiness and career exploration is pivotal to educating children for life. We need to create connections between their learning and their future lives and prepare them by developing job-related skills and help them discover the possible careers of the future. We keep these ideals at the forefront of how we teach our classes and are looking forward to the possibilities of this school year.
