Hi Math 4 Families,

I am Ms. Sarah and I will be your child’s math teacher this year. This is an exciting year in math with lots to learn about decimals, long division, and double digit multiplication.  Level 4 Math is a bit of a transition from Primary Math as your child will now be responsible for a math book and transferring problems from the book onto paper and answering them. This takes a bit of practice and so consequently we go a little slow in the beginning to ensure that each child has the procedure down correctly! One of the ways that you can help at home (aside from going over the homework) is to help your child practice their multiplication facts. One of the greatest indicators of success in this class is knowing multiplication tables fluently. Practice makes permanent brain connections!!!

A typical day in our math class looks like:

8:45-9:00 Power-ups, Mental Math, and Problem Solving

9:00-9:10 Go over the previous lessons homework

9:10-9:30 New Concept

9:30-10:00 Time to work on Homework from the lesson with me

Homework:

Students are given time to work on homework in class daily. There are a few days where a new concept might be harder and we work on it for the majority of the time, however, those days are the exception and not the rule. Please let me know if your child is working any longer than 30 minutes on math homework and we can work together to remedy that.

Late work is only accepted until the next test.  Please make sure you are checking ParentConnect weekly as well as the progress report I send home after every test. Attached to that progress report will be all of the homework that they have completed and graded since the last test.

Your child's homework is counted as an effort grade as we do not feel that students should be penalized for practice of concepts. Homework makes up the Effort portion of your child's grade in Q. The academic grade is from tests.

Tests:

Tests are after every 5 lessons, so we usually have one once a week.  Test corrections may be made and turned in for half credit at any time before the next test.

Grading Policy:

Tests  - Academic Grade (Letter grade)

Homework -  Effort Grade (OSN)
