Basic Class Info

Grading:

I primarily use three different forms of grading:

~A completion grade is given when the assignment is a practice of new skills, to get full credit your child needs to complete the assignment to the best of their ability.

~A percentage grade is given when there is a certain amount of points for an assignment and your child will receive their grade based on the amount of answers they got correct. This type of grading is used primarily on assignments such as Daily Language tests or tests in content areas

~I use a rubric based system for most projects and long term assignments.

Assignments must be turned in on time for the best grade possible. Please check Q  frequently to make sure that your child is turning in assignments. In general, most of our assignments have a due date of no later than Friday of that week. Occasionally there are long term assignments that will require a different turn in dates and those will be posted with those assignments as well as their monthly calendar found in their binder. If your child receives a grade they are not happy with, I welcome and encourage them to make corrections for a better grade. This can be done as soon as they get the assignment back.

Grading Scale:

90-100% A

80-89%B

70-79%C

60-69%D

59% and Below  F

Homework:

If your child is working to their full potential in class then they will most likely have little homework on a regular basis. The exception to this being individual reading and Math, which are things that should be practiced nightly. If you would like your child to have nightly homework they can always read, free write,  or work on Reading Plus.  Please let me know if your child is consistently having more than an hour of homework a night so we can work together to solve that problem.

Discipline:

I try to keep a system of positive discipline in my classroom. If a behavior is disrupting the learning or safety of other students, a verbal warning will be given. If the behavior continues the student will be asked to separate themselves from the situation they are in. If the behavior still continues the child will be asked to remove themselves from the room and take a cool down break.  If the behavior is a major risk to our learning environment Mrs. Brittany will be notified.

Lunch/Snack/Birthday treats

Lunch and snack are a chance for your child to refuel their bodies and brains. The best way to do that is with foods that are full of healthy ingredients! Foods that are full of sugar or fats are great as treats, but do not give your child the sustained fuel that they need for school. If you are planning to bring in Birthday treats, please be mindful of allergies that our class has (if any) and just e-mail me for a heads up. Everyone loves a donut treat, but 3 in one day is a bit much even for this confirmed donut lover!

Recess:

As we all know the Alaskan weather can be crazy! Your child will be going out to recess/brainbreak almost everyday as long as it is safe for them to do so. Rain or slightly colder temperatures do not keep us in, so please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather when they come to school. They will have much more fun at recess if they are properly prepared!!! Sometimes this is a hard sell for "too cool" 6th graders, but we will do our best if you can do yours!
