In addition to our BOOP program events, the Bowman PTA hosts an annual Book Bash, Fall Carnival, Math & Science Night, and monthly Movie Nights for all Bowman families to enjoy! Many BOOP families are involved in supporting Bowman school events and the Bowman PTA. You can subscribe by clicking the blue plus sign on the button of each calendar to always stay up-to-date.
Do you have a special hobby or expertise? Could you share your knowledge through activities for elementary children? Then we encourage you to become involved in mini-courses! Mini-course leaders decide the ages and numbers of children in their course. Successful courses in the past have included mural painting, zoo tours, basketball, outdoor cooking, candy-making, knitting, skiing, cupcake decorating, and rock climbing. In addition to course instructors, parent volunteers are needed to assist in these courses.
An annual, back-to-school potluck is held each fall to meet and greet old and new families in the program.
Teachers, parents, students and siblings have been spotted spinning and do-si-do-ing -even those of us with two left feet! A professional caller and a talented band has everyone steppin’ it up & yee–hawing! Families bring their favorite snack to share, and BOOP provides the drinks.
The Caroling and Skate Party is an evening gathering in December. BOOP families and staff gather for ice skating and holiday caroling in the school neighborhood
This long-standing Optional Program activity is held in December. Teachers open their classrooms for a half-day of crafts. Each classroom hosts several activity tables and parent volunteers supervise the crafts. All BOOP students travel from room to room, participating in crafts. Candle-making, ornament-making, edible ‘tree’ cones, oranges studded with cloves, and a community service sewing project have been a few of the yearly favorites. No need to worry if you’re not ‘crafty’ – each classroom has a parent coordinator who works with the teachers to select the crafts. The instructions and materials are provided at each table. Parent volunteers guide the children through the activities. Winter crafts is a fun way for parent volunteers to interact with students from every family group.
Come support young entrepeuners in BOOP at local craft fairs around town and at school through the year!
This event is held on the last day of school in the evening on the school playground. The Parents’ Group provides hot dogs and hamburgers, and families bring side dishes in potluck style.
In this celebratory event, each BOOP 6th Grader will give a short speech and get a book from the program.
This biannual event, open to all BOOP families, is held during a spring weekend in Homer. This activity is family driven and is not an Anchorage School District event. Families are responsible for transportation and lodging. Some families camp in tents, others stay in campers, or reserve rooms at the Driftwood Inn, the Ocean Shores or other places of choice. Sea Week often coincides with either the Shorebird Festival, Mother’s Day weekend &/or the weekend with the optimum low tide. Saturday is usually spent investigating tide pools, visiting the city of Homer, and enjoying a potluck barbecue, kite-flying and games on the beach. A Sunday activity — such as a boat ride across the bay or a guided tour of tidal pools — requires early reservations and prepayment to receive a group discount.
The Bowman Elementary Garden aims to provide kids with hands-on learning opportunities. In this space, Bowman community members learn the joy of working with the earth and working together. Students prepare the beds during spring Field Day, maintain the garden over the summer, and help harvest in the fall.
