Who We Are
We believe academics, social skills, and respect are important. Real-life should be integrated into the classroom to make learning meaningful. We value communication, creativity, flexibility, cooperation, small and large group participation, community service, goal-setting, leadership, and family involvement.
We see personal growth occurring along a continuum of expanding abilities, awareness, and attitudes.
Enrollment in the Bowman Open Optional Program is by lottery. Families need to complete an application for each child prior to the lottery. Tours of the program are highly recommended.
Enrolling your child in our program constitutes a commitment to support the program with your time, either in the classroom or in other ways. Parent participation is a fundamental feature of our program. Helping in your child’s classroom one-half day per month is an expectation. Find out more about involvement here.
As an alternative schools program, we are open to any child residing in the Municipality of Anchorage. The Anchorage School District does not provide transportation to students who live outside the Bowman attendance area; families need to arrange transportation.
Students entering Kindergarten must be 5 on or before September 1 of their kindergarten year.
Siblings of children already in the program are not automatically enrolled; parents with children already attending the Bowman Open Optional Program MUST ENTER A SIBLING IN THE LOTTERY in order to be considered for placement.
The lottery process is set by the Anchorage School District. The lottery is held twice yearly, in the spring and in the fall. Students are assigned to the program on a “space available” basis. Students who are not selected are given a slot on waitlist for that grade level.
Applications for the lottery may be completed online through the following link: Lottery Application.
