Additional Support For Learning

The Additional Support for Learners Faculty support pupils’ pathways from S1 through to the senior phase. We work closely with other Faculties to ensure that pupils are given the support they need to succeed in their chosen subject pathway.

Support is provided in different forms dependent on the need of the pupil and subject. This may take the form of; in class, small group or one to one support.

The Faculty is also home to Enhanced Provision which provides significant support for pupils from S1 to the senior phase. Pupils in Enhanced Provision follow a timetable where their curriculum is individually created to suit their level of need. The ASL teachers have an instrumental role in ensuring that pupils gain appropriate qualifications and skills. To achieve this, we work closely with all faculties to ensure that pupils experience their subjects in class with their peers.

For example, one of our pupils achieved 7 National 2s covering, English, Maths, ICT, Music, Craft, Social Sciences, Science. Another of our pupils has gained National 2 in Maths and English and is now progressing to National 3 units.

In addition, the faculty organises all SQA Assessment Arrangements. In S3 all pupils who have a registered support need or have been referred by teachers are assessed for Additional Assessment Arrangements. This entails collecting evidence from subjects and a computerised assessment, which gives an indication of the arrangements best suited to the pupil. This is then discussed with the pupil and shared with all teaching staff. We review the arrangements each year through the collation of assessment evidence in accordance with the SQA. All arrangements are registered with the SQA before the final assessment in April/May.
