Mathematics is important in our everyday life. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.
In S3 pupils will continue to cover Mathematics and Numeracy Experiences and Outcomes, taking into account their prior learning in S1 and S2. There are opportunities to further develop problem solving skills through Mangahigh competitions, SMC Maths Challenge, Bebras and occasional one of events where pupils can compete with others across Scotland.
The mathematics experiences and outcomes are structured within three main organisers, each of which contains a number of subdivisions:
Number, money and measure
· Estimation and rounding
· Number and number processes
· Multiples, factors and primes
· Powers and roots
· Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages
· Money
· Time
· Measurement
· Mathematics – its impact on the world, past, present and future
· Patterns and relationships
· Expressions and equations.
Shape, position and movement
· Properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects
· Angle, symmetry and transformation.
Information handling
· Data and analysis
· Ideas of chance and uncertainty.
In Mathematics during S3, pupils will be assessed and grouped to suit their pathway for the senior phase. This will mean that from January of S3 pupils will study topics that directly link to
- National 5 Mathematics
- National 5 Applications of Mathematics
- National 3/4 Applications of Mathematics
