All pupils in S1 attend the Faculty for a period of Computing.
Pupils use this period to gain skills in understanding the importance of Cyber Security, and importantly how to stay safe online. They will then explore how webpages are made, learning key skills in basic web development. Throughout this course, pupils will be working on developing their L2 (and in some cases L3) outcomes.
Pupils will be using Minecraft for Education to learn about Cyber Security. Pupils will learn about the following borad areas, and concepts:
Network Heroes
Network Components
Networks, network components, protocols, packets, local-area networks (LAN) and wide-area networks (WAN)
Password Protection
Brute-force, passwords, entropy, firewall, two-factor authentication (2FA), Layered strategies
Malware
Malware, quarantine, phishing, pop-up ads, delivery vectors/attack vectors
To check for understanding of concepts covered, pupils will have three progress checks . These will be issued at appropriate times in the unit.
Progress checks are designed to assess what pupils know, and help determine where they are within their CfE Level.
Pupils will use the W3Schools website to work through a range of lessons focused on basic Web Design. By looking at HTML, pupils will develop skills required to develop a simple webpage.
Pupils will look at the following areas:
Basic HTML page structure
Basic HTML elements
HTML headings
HTML paragraphs
HTML Page title
HTML formatting

As pupils work through the various sections, they will apply their learning to a website of their choosing.
To check for understanding of concepts covered, pupils will have several small progress checks. These will be issued at appropriate times throughout the unit.
Below you will see a sample timeline of topics and assessment for the S1 Computing course. The timeline is subject to change, depending on class and teacher.
