The majority of information on this site has been updated for session 2025/26.
Whether your child knows what subjects they want to choose, or they haven’t really given it much thought, it’s important that they keep their options open.
Your Skills Development Scotland school careers adviser will be providing support over coming weeks to help them think about their choices, including the offer of a one-to-one conversation.
There’s also the opportunity for you – as a parent or carer – to join the conversation and discuss where their options might take them in the future. This could be in person depending on timetable availability or by phone or video conference. Get in touch with the school to find out more.
You’ll also find lots of useful tools and information to help with subject choices on the careers service website, My World of Work. Registering for an account makes it much more personal for your child and means they’ll be guided to the right content whatever stage they’re at.
Why not take some time to explore with them the About Me, Strengths, and Skills Explorer tools which match careers to who they are, what they enjoy and what they’re good at. From there they can explore different jobs and the subjects they need to get in. The Options Choice tool can also help them explore the jobs their favourite subjects could lead to and for more info on how to make good decisions, why not check out the Future Me magazine.
