LAST UPDATED NOV 2024: Addition of Appropriate Progress (AP) measure - a definition of this is contained on the main page for each year group.
The topics we have covered in this reporting window are:
Portraiture
Developing Understanding of Facial Proportions – Term One
Through the My Future Aspirations project learners developed a range of artistic and reflective skills. By creating detailed self-portraits in pencil, they enhanced their observational skills while focusing on proportion, tone and texture to achieve a sense of realism. The inclusion of backgrounds illustrating their future aspirations allowed learners to explore personal symbolism and visual storytelling, encouraging creativity and self-expression while responding to a live brief. This project also helps students develop compositional skills, balancing their portraits with meaningful imagery and helping learners to understand how art can communicate identity and ambition.
Built Environment
Observational Drawing (Illustrator Eleanor Crow) - Term Two
Developing use of materials (Pencil and watercolour) – Term Two
Learners have developed observational skills and explored the use of different materials within the classroom. Learners have been taking inspiration from the illustrator Eleanor Crow and have designed their own shop fronts using delicate pencil outlines in preparation for adding watercolour. With the watercolours learners have been developing control of materials understanding how to build colour intensity and add finer details furthering their understanding of watercolour paints.
The majority of work covered in S2 Art and Design is initially based around CfE Level 3 outcomes, however this progresses to Level 4 for many of our learners in the later part of the session. The majority of learners during Terms 1 and 2 are working at Third B or above. Learners working below this level continue to be offered classroom support with CfE Level 3 content to ensure progression in learning.
Working Level and Working Grade descriptions for S2 Art & Design:
Third A: Making excellent progress in CfE Level 3. Learners work well independently and can consistently demonstrate key skills required such as experimenting with a range of media and technologies to create images and objects. Learners show excellent attention to detail within their work through observing and recording and can create material that shows accuracy of representation. Learners show excellent understanding of how visual elements and visual concepts can be combined within Art & Design.
Third B: Making good progress in CfE Level 3. Learners can often work independently and demonstrate good knowledge of key skills required such as experimenting with a range of media and technologies to create images and objects. Learners show good attention to detail within their work through observing and recording and can create material that shows good accuracy of representation. Learners show good understanding of how visual elements and visual concepts can be combined within Art & Design.
Third C: Making reasonable progress in CfE Level 3 but finds some aspects of the course challenging. Learners demonstrate some knowledge of key skills required to create images and objects but can sometimes lack the knowledge and understanding to implement further skills. Learners show some attention to detail within their work through observing and recording and can create material that shows some accuracy of representation. Learners show some understanding of how visual elements and visual concepts can be combined but can struggle to apply this within Art & Design.
Third D: Making some progress in CfE Level 3 but finds many aspects of the course challenging. Learners demonstrate some knowledge of key skills required to create images and objects. Learners show some attention to detail within their work through observing and recording and can struggle to create material that shows some accuracy of representation. Learners show some understanding of how visual elements and visual concepts can be combined but can struggle to apply this within Art & Design. Projects are completed to a basic standard or can often be incomplete.
Second A to D: While continuing to experience CfE Level 3 outcomes the majority of the work can be very challenging, and most tasks require further explanation and to be broken down into smaller, simplified versions in order to make progress and build confidence.
