English and Literacy is a core component of the school experience at Kemnay Academy. Pupils study a wide variety of texts while in English, from poetry to film, modern to historic. The faculty has strong links with the library and pupils at all levels are encouraged to read widely.
Throughout S1 Pupils develop knowledge of language and character across the year. Pupils are given a chance to lead their own learning through project based learning and engaging in a genre study. Pupils are heavily encouraged to read widely through their reading periods.
The S2 experience builds on the skills developed throughout S1. Pupils develop a greater understanding of how impact is created in a text. Pupils also begin to explore media texts in depth, explore how experience is communicated.
Pupils explore differing forms of writing, both personal and critical and explore social issues as presented through central texts.
We also advance our Literacy Programme to expand interest in more forms of literature.
Pupils are required to read 20 minutes daily. This reading is your child’s English homework throughout the year. It can be done every night or in reading blocks for longer periods. However, habitual reading every day encourages lifetime reading skills. Parent support is vital.
All pupils are encouraged to read widely as part of English. Pupils in first and second year have dedicated reading periods to help develop their reading skills as part of our accelerated reader program. Working with pupils we have produced a video to display our hopes and aims for the program.
The English and Literacy faculty offer a wide range of course at senior phase level; covering all levels of study and a wide range of content. Further information can be found on the school options and pathways website linked below.
