We'll be starting with some call and response. After reading a current event story, you'll be sharing what you've learned (call) and others will respond with their opinions (response)
Select a story from today's top headlines. Click it to read the whole article.
1. The top 5 pieces of information you gathered from the article.
2. Your own opinions based on that information.
3. Three sentences you can share out synthesizing the story. Use this format: First, [insert what happened]. Because of that [insert what happened next]. Now [insert your opinion].
Look at your 3-sentence synthesis. How will you perform those three sentences in a way that is compelling in 10 seconds or less? Think about:
Your tone of voice
How you will emphasize your point
If you'd like to add body percussion or a beat structure
How you plan to get people to pay attention to all three sentences
Map this out and practice it on your own. You have 3 minutes to prepare yourself for your performance!
Present your 3-sentence "ripped from the headlines" story to the class. As we listen, we will be considering your point of view, as well as how we feel or what we think about your story. Immediately after you are finished, randomly call our the name of one student to share their response to your story.
If you are called to provide a response: immediately share your response to the story in one sentence. Do not pause - just respond!
After you respond, it is your turn to present.
Think about the call and response performances and reflect on these questions:
1. What was challenging about creating the "call" - the 3 sentences you had to present?
2. What was challenging about the "response"?
3. How would you improve the call and response process next time?
4. What made you uncomfortable about this process?
5. What did you enjoy about this process?
Jot down your thoughts. After a few minutes, turn and talk about your reflections with a partner. Be ready to share out in large group discussion.
