Now that we have a good understanding of both the Hero's Journey and the elements of musical composition through improvisation, it's time to put it all together. You'll be using your previously created musical map to create a rap that outlines the story of The Odyssey.
The intent is to create something that captures the cycle of the Hero's Journey, utilizes both preparation and improvisation, and encourages participation. It does not have to be the "best" musical composition - it must only meet those 3 requirements specified.
You can work alone or with a group of up to 4 people. Please follow these instructions for creating your rap:
Use the form map you just created to write out your rap. Your rap should be between 2-3 minutes in length.
Be sure that your rap highlights the Hero's Journey, either in its own structure or in how you share the story of The Odyssey.
Insert opportunities for students to participate and respond to your rap as you write it out.
Practice performing the rap several times. How will you include movement, tone of voice, phrasing and flow into your performance? You do not need to memorize your rap, but you should be ready to perform it with expression.
Be prepared to present the work to the class, who will respond to your work both during the rap and as feedback after you finish your performance.
