Teacher Overview
This unit is designed for grades 9-12. The objective is to understand the structure and connection between epic poetry and historical artistic improvisation methods (in various art forms). Students use The Odyssey, as well as various Rap Battles and musical improvisation to explore how writers create a Hero's Journey through the acts of speaking and listening.
Often, epic poems can be difficult for high school students to connect to on a personal level, much less decipher the difficult level of text. By teaching the idea of epic poetry as an act of speaking and listening about a topic that is of significant cultural or heroic importance through improvisation students are much more inclined to work through the text itself to build an understanding of the oral and written tradition.
THIS UNIT SHOULD BE TAUGHT EITHER IN CONJUNCTION WITH OR RIGHT AFTER READING THE ODYSSEY.
