The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute competition designed for students in grade 8 and below. The competition focuses on middle school mathematics topics, including counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry (including the Pythagorean Theorem), spatial visualization, and interpreting graphs and tables. Some of the later questions may touch on beginning algebra topics, such as linear or quadratic functions and coordinate geometry.
The AMC 10/12 are the first in a series of competitions that eventually lead all the way to the IMO, the pinnacle of all high school mathematics competitions. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.
These exams are used to determine eligibility for the AIME, with a designated percent of the top scorers of the AMC 10 and AMC 12 qualifying for the invitational exam.
Every year, two versions of the exam are offered. Students can take both the A and B versions of the AMC 10/12 exams in the same year and use either exam to qualify for the AIME. With many schools offering only the “A” version of the exams, your student can double their opportunity to qualify for the AIME by also taking the “B” version at AoPS Academy.
To participate in the AMC 8, a student must be in grade 8 or below and also under 15.5 years of age on the day of the competition.
To participate in the AMC 10, a student must be in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the competition.
To participate in the AMC 12, a student must be in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the competition.
