"How Can Robotic Arms Be Utilized in Art?
Art Collider Lab at Korea National University of Arts, in collaboration with BAT partners and BetaCity Center at University of Seoul, conducted research and development on an extracurricular program for an art school using robotic arms during the winter of 2022. The aim of this study was to create an extracurricular educational program in collaboration with the Digital Fabrication Lab at School of Fine Arts, considering the collected opinions of participating experts and students.
With the recent paradigm shift towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution and individualized custom manufacturing, the barriers to entry for future (manufacturing) technologies are decreasing. As a result, industrial robots are being utilized for various purposes beyond traditional manufacturing, such as in construction, art, marketing, and services. Particularly in creative fields like art, architecture, and design, industrial robots, based on their end effectors, are used to implement customized sculpting techniques based on versatility, scalability, scale, and precision, or even as artworks themselves.
The <Digital Fabrication Demonstration Workshop> targeting students at Korea National University of Arts is an initiative to prepare for the introduction of robotics technology into creative activities, considering this trend. It aims to provide opportunities for students to gain a basic understanding and acquisition of knowledge of this somewhat unfamiliar media, experience it firsthand, and search for the potential application of advanced industrial robots in individual creative work, based on experiential learning.
