Teri Seo is an artist who choreographs with music in pursuit of convergence arts. The artist has experimented with choreography by employing counterpoint, a kind of composition technique in the works <The Body Being (to be) With> (2017), <The Person Being (to be) With> (2018), and <Three moves visit to the “作”> (2019). This movement is about directing body parts such as the head, hands, and feet according to the 20 directions created by the combination of three different spinal motions (back and forth, side to side, twist). In this work, the shift of the force caused by gravity was added to the movement and the artist choreographed a duet dance that portrays the relationship between two notes in the counterpoint by the movement and timing of the two dancers copying and repeating the movement from each other. This way, the artist questions the established choreography method herself.
<Duet with One Body>
Teri Seo analyzed Bach’s 10 Inventions (BWV 772-781) in collaboration with Jooseong Kim, pianist and conductor, and created 10 duet dances. In this work, there is no dancer. Teri Seo, the choreographer, makes and realizes the movements of the two people. The artist takes videos of her dance and overlaps them into one screen to make a duet dance. The visual media enables it to incorporate two bodies from different times by editing techniques. The artist has carried out experiments to figure out the five questions as below over the past 6 months.
• If I learn the rules to arrange the structure of tones systematically from music, could it work out the numerous variables the human body has?
• If I document the choreography through videos like a music score, then, the body in the video can exist like the body on the stage?
• Could the movement of the body continuously survive, not being instantly disappeared on the stage?
• If the noise generated during performing the choreographies is recorded as a sound and added to the video, could the sound fake the choreographer’s copied body as if it is another dancer?
• Would the video look as if it is a duet dance by two dancers?
*Counterpoint is a composition technique that combines two or more musical lines according to fixed techniques and aesthetic criteria.
