Hayne Park studied art and is now majoring in glasswork. Since 2015, she is practicing as an artist and designer of a lighting brand under the name of “Gloryhole.” Starting from the exhibition Gloryhole Light Sales (OPEN CIRCUIT, Seoul, 2015), The artist has continued to design and produce lighting offering “lights to enjoy keeping close” in the everyday spaces people live their lives. Based on this practice, the artist has researched and presented her interests across art – design – technology and where artworks and design products intersect. She exhibited at Gwangju Design Biennale (2017), Ghost Shotgun (Audio Visual Pavilion, Seoul, 2019) and was selected as a prior matching designer at the DDP Design Fair (2019).
<Phosphene Fishtank>
Phosphene refers to the phenomenon of seeing an instantaneous scintillating light, most often caused when the eye is rubbed (physical) or when the retina is stimulated chemically, magnetically or through some other means than light. These hallucinative shapes, usually seen in the dark, caused Hayne Park to surmise them to be images that only exist inside the sense of an individual. This work consists of the connection between inside and outside. Two installations are associated with breathing and “luminescence,” the capacity to self-produce lights. One is about exposing phosphene out of the human body though humans cannot self-produce light. The other is about making lights–lightings by taking light sources from luminescent creatures such as dinoflagellates in the sea. Visitors need to hold their breath placing their fingers on the oxygen saturation monitor. The oxygen saturation data functions as a dimmer so as the oxygen level gets lower, the dimmer gradually lights up the jellyfish.<Breathe and Wave>
'Dinoflagellates' are a type of marine plankton that bioluminesce when stimulated externally. This artwork visually portrays the process of human respiration creating waves that generate light in other organisms. While the exact reason why they emit light remains unclear, it is believed to be a defense mechanism against predators.
