Following the previous overview of various writing methods of the game columnists, we listened to the experiences of real game journalists. What is the writing of a game webzine journalist who writes on the games? We first looked at games as objects of criticism.
It’s hard to criticize a game. The term “game” is overly inclusive, relative, and constantly changing. Games are a medium of a very speculative experience that is played directly. Therefore, rather than looking at the game through the existing discourse of criticism, independent methods and standards of criticism are needed. To do this, it is important to think about how we should look at the game; we have to experience the game from our own point of view. Regardless of the various external factors surrounding the game and its evaluation of other communities, we must play, think, and view it ourselves. However, while looking at the game from our own perspectives, we have to pay attention to objective conclusions based on the play experience.
As we have seen previously, games are more speculative media than any other object of criticism, and their scope is very wide and complex. In particular, since it is essentially an entertainment medium, subjective impressions about fun are bound to be different. Then, how can game criticism be established? Game criticism is not a way to tackle a game. You don’t need to know everything about the game to be critical; it just has to be universal to win the sympathy of players. Criticism is writing for its own sake, for conclusions, and for persuasion. It’s not just about the game, it’s about writing that has its own value. Therefore, all criticism inevitably undergoes an extension of discourse. It’s not just writing about a single game; it’s about exploring and telling a story about the magnificent world behind it. Therefore, in order to write a critique of a game, one must first go through a discursive process. The discourse will become an introduction to the critique, and the process of drawing conclusions based on it is absolutely necessary. The gameplay is extremely private. Therefore, in the process of drawing a conclusion, it is necessary to have a part that can win the sympathy of many players.
Critique or review is another creation and allows us to engage with the game in many different ways. As a journalist, he says that the process of engaging with games as something more than just a medium of entertainment can be a critique. The whole process of playing the game from various perspectives and thinking about writing that can be read objectively is a means of writing a critique.
