Rules of the Game

Participants played games together and discussed various gender and socio-political issues. Participants used paper and board game materials to make, complete, and test the rules of the game themselves.

The Goal and Reward of a Game

The goal in the game and the reward given when the goal is achieved may vary from a simple congratulatory comment to quantitative rewards and non-materialized rewards.In the case of a clicker game, in which the game is played only with a simple click, a reward system is given immediately at the time of the click. These clicker games bear a lot of resemblance to capitalism. Repeated action of clicks can be compared to the labor of capitalism. As such, the clicker game has a system that positively substitutes the value of labor.

Indie game creator Lucas Pope’s <Papers, Please> also consists of a simple click, but does not have the clear and simple reward system that existing clicker games normally have. In this game, the player becomes an immigration officer and, by clicking, decides who can and cannot pass the immigration process. The player simply examines people who enter the immigration checkpoint and permits or rejects entry according to the instructions provided in the game, but the instructions in the game also force the player to make morally incorrect choices that make the player feel guilty and remorseful. Labor through clicks in this game is not perceived to have a positive value. As the game progresses, the reward for play questions the moral conscience of the player by presenting difficult choices. <To Build a Better Mousetrap> by Molleindustria is also related to criticism of the social labor structure in which players get rewards through repeated clicks.These games raise questions about the reward system. It uses the mechanics of rules and rewards of games to present political and social issues. Players have the opportunity to think about our society through gameplay and thinking about a better community.

Prototyping Board Games

In order to make a game that can contribute to creating a better community, participants wrote about the problems and goals that must be dealt with in games. Participants wrote down all the problems faced in the society post-its. Various issues were addressed, and it was possible to divide teams based on issues gender, labor, and ethical issues.

Teams created according to their interests decide to create a board game that raises questions about social issues. After discussing the rules and methods of the game by each team, there was a time to set the detailed rules by selecting limited board game materials that could best implement the rules.
