Presentation and Feedback Sessions

Examples of the production process and publishing of indie or art games and related issues were introduced. Participants presented their completed games and had a time to play them.

Publishing of a Game

There have been various game development tools that are now accessible to small independent developers such as Twine and Unity. And various publication methods have become very accessible to individual developers. For example, with Steam, an online distribution system, the publication of indie games worldwide has become possible which resulted in creation and diversification of unique indie games. Following the case of Steam, itch.io also is being used by indie game developers for publishing and distributing. With active distribution of indie games by small individual developers, many online games such as #ResistJam that are against any forms of oppressive authoritarianism and other games with more diverse games have newly become available.

Individual Presentation and Feedback Sessions

The “game” that participants discussed throughout the workshops could mean various things for each of them. All the participants contemplated their “own game” in their own areas, and as a result, they were able to expand the medium of games in various ways of expression.

Participants made their own games following guidelines of all limited components discussed during the workshop. Even with the development of technology, it was an opportunity that expressive games could be designed, even if the game is composed only of basic components. Although they learned the same thing in the same workshop and made their own games based on it, it was notable that they created such different results.

There were some participants who designed the level by applying more than elements discussed during the workshop. The Unity tool can be easily applied by simply adjusting the script and screen. Also, various expressions are easily done by searching for example scripts or lecture videos of the contents on Google. Therefore, participants who had no previous knowledge of game design were able to make their own games by applying them.

It could be a challenge to discuss and develop a game, especially when participants with such diverse backgrounds have to collaborate. As the workshop progressed, challenges that participants who were previously unfamiliar with the topic faced became a great opportunity. Participants talked about games throughout the workshop, but the concerns they shared about games became alternative values. The stories and time we shared for a better community have already led us towards a better community. The workshop is over, but we will continue to work towards creating a better community.
