After discussing the social problems as a team, participants set the rules and goals of the game themselves and made a board game to create a better community.
Participants discussed how they can most effectively express their concerns about issues surrounding them, including gender, abandoned dogs, cultural industry, and class inequality through board games.
After a brief presentation of the rules, goals, and rewards of the board game created by each team, participants had time to test the game to see whether these rules and goals convey the problem.
After playing each other’s games, participants were given time to better understand the process of making a game by providing constructive feedback.
Game and Text
Participants take a look at how text is used in games that share small, personal stories. Also, they compose a simple dialogue scene using an example.
Twine
Twine is a game development tool that focuses on the visual structure of text. The advantage is that users can easily create games with simple code without any knowledge of programming languages. Twine allows participants to create games where text becomes the most important element of play, and it allows participants to create games where users can utilize the hypertext feature that allows them to jump to the next text by selecting a text.
Twine has the advantage which allows for the visualization of the coding process and how entered codes interact with each other. As shown in the figure below, participants could make a game while checking the process of making a game on a map with boxes and arrows, which facilitates hypertext thinking.
Participants were able to easily learn the structure and usage of Twine and have time to make their own text-based game by applying it in various ways.
