Actions that are Possible in Games

The action of walking in the game world was examined focusing on walking simulator games. By moving the character using examples, participants explored various actions that were not easily found in other typical games.

Possible Actions

When recalling actions in normal games, one can think of actions like shooting, picking up items, jumping, falling, and climbing. And these actions are extremely limited. Whereas, when recalling verbs that were hardly ever used in the game, what changes will the game potentially bring if these verbs become possible actions in the game? If various actions beyond the stereotype of actions in games become possible, what new discourse can these games present?

The game <Please Don’t Touch Anything> is noteworthy in that it deals with the stereotypes of the players’ actions in the game. Players of the game do not hesitate to press the button when they see one in the game. Players already have learned so much about the nature of the game that if they “press the button,” it usually allows them to move to the next level or a change will occur. But the game puts a button in front of the player and tells them to "do nothing."

Contrary to <Please Don’t Touch Anything>, <Windosill> induces players to perform unfamiliar actions to advance the game. It lets players who have been accustomed to the conventional gaming behaviors to think about how diverse the possible behaviors in the game can be.

Walking Simulator

Recently, a number of games with the tagged genre of #walkingsimulator is steadily increasing on Steam, a game distribution platform. Games in this genre simply allows players to explore around without doing much during the gameplay. In the game, there is no clear goal, and all that the player does is to simulate the game world in walking simulator games.

<The Stanley Parable> shows the expressive potential of a walking simulator game in that it is a meta-game that interacts with the medium of the game itself as a walking simulator. The player does not simply walk-simulate the game world, but willfully explore the game that is directly against what the game initially suggests as an ideal gameplay experience. This is where the action in games becomes important as a player’s action.

Unity 3D

Participants had time to learn Unity3D, a game creation engine, from the beginning so that they could create games they wanted by using the rules, actions, and texts, all previously discussed and brainstormed together. By using the example files, participants were able to learn about Unity’s configuration menu and how it works, and lay the groundwork for making a game.
