Rian Kim

Rian Kim graduated from the Department of Stage Design at Korea National University of Arts. Rather than pursuing a single genre among the performing arts, exhibitions, and video, the artist pursues experiencing various genres. The artist creates a “theater: a body-like stage” that symbolizes the expansion of the body, experiments with movements within it, and tries to incorporate multimedia (video, sound, lighting) expressions that fit the narrative created by the artist. The Body that Wants to be Connected presented in this exhibition is an attempt to explore the possibility of body-to-body connection and the true encounter of the body under the theme of collision between body and body, mind and body.

Desire for a Connected Body"
This work begins with the desire to break free from the confines of the self, trapped in isolation, and seeks connection with others. I consider our 'body' as the best vessel for understanding the 'soul,' and I wish to experience and comprehend the body. The space of the artwork is both the body and the inner self, built with the desire of the body and the inner self. The meeting of two bodies signifies throwing oneself into an uncertain world. The purpose of this work is to fully embrace the resulting serendipity and experiences.
The external appearance of the artwork is a metaphor for a large 'coffin.' Inside, there are two tents, which can also be seen as a metaphor for a 'tomb.' The audience can enter one of the two tents, and one of them has me inside throughout the exhibition period. When the audience enters this artwork, I would very carefully look under my feet and to the sides, paying attention to the sensations in my body to feel who it is, in the dim light of the audience's silhouettes against the surface of the tent. They can enter the tent, close the door, and stay inside as long as they wish. Having already isolated themselves from the vast external space, entering this isolated space once again, I hope the audience can experience a sense of immersion and isolation within themselves.
I believe that when we are able to connect, when we are intensely focused on the sensations of our bodies and feel isolated within ourselves, our desire to connect is amplified, and it is only then that we can truly see the other.
