What is “June is Recreation and Parks Month”?

At the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), we recognize the month of June as “June is Recreation and Parks Month” (JRPM). JRPM highlights the many benefits that recreation and parks bring to our communities, and acknowledges the strong foundation of parks and recreation facilities & programs in Alberta. Celebrating JRPM draws attention to the many benefits of recreation and parks for individual Albertans, communities, and the province.

Our long-term vision is to make JRPM a household name, so that when June rolls around, Albertans are eager and excited to spend the month (and beyond) enjoying all of the parks and recreation activities and facilities that they have at their disposal.

#CommUNITY

This year, JRPM's theme is #CommUNITY.

The recreation and parks sector in Alberta, especially at the community level, has been deeply affected over the past 18 months. Our outdoor spaces and places have been highlighted for the important role they play in providing venues for physical and mental health, respite, and also for being able to continue our social connections.

So this June, we encourage you to visit your #CommUNITY parks, recreation centres, and open spaces to celebrate Recreation & Parks Month.

National Indigenous History Month & National Indigenous peoples day

June is National Indigenous History Month. This month, we honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) in Canada. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to celebrate and learn more about the unique cultures and traditions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples - participate in activities in your community or plan your own event.

Community better challenge

If the #JRPMchallenge isn't enough for you, check out ParticipACTION's Community Better Challenge!

From June 1-30, 2021, get your organization, school, sports group, workplace, or community to participate and track your minutes as a team.

Not only can individuals and teams win prizes by tracking their physical activity on the app, but the Most Active Community in Canada will also be awarded $100,000 to support local physical activity initiatives. One community in each province and territory will also receive a cash prize to support local physical activity initiatives.

Alberta’s Recreation and Parks charity – building healthy communities and improving quality of life.

As a provincial Charitable organization, the Recreation for Life Foundation envisages: “A province and communities within, that embrace and proactively use recreation and parks as essential for enhancing individual well-being, community vitality, economic sustainability, and natural resource protection and conservation.”

We raise funds to support the future of recreation and parks by supporting:

1) Students and Emerging Professionals

2) Research and Researchers

3) Innovation and Program Development
