What surprised you?
What made you think?
What confused you?
What was familiar and unfamiliar?
What do you believe?
Lectio Divina (divine reading) and Visio Divina (divine seeing) are two methods of guided prayer that help you slow down and let a text or image speak to your heart. Lectio Divina tends to be from the Christian traditions, but you can find similar slow meditations in many traditions. Use any text you want for Lectio Divina and any image or even gazing out into the natural world for Visio Divina. The steps are generally the same. For Lectio Divina, you will slowly read the text four times with meditation in between. For Visio Divina, you’ll be gazing over the image at least four times.
Listen/Look with your heart for a word, phrase, or part of the image you’re looking at that stands out to you.\
Reflect on the part that is speaking to you in a manner that works best for you.
Respond to your reflection in prayer, noting what action you feel called to do in response.
Rest in silence for some time after your fourth listen or gaze.
Take at least 5 minutes to try this at least once this week with a passage of scripture and at least once with an image or by going outside.
Take time to journal about your beliefs and your time you took with the spiritual practice. We offer you some questions here that might be useful:
What does it look like for you to be God’s love for others?
What do you imagine resisting evil should look like?
What does your calling to serve the church, Arnolia, and the world look like?
