The Examen originates from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. But I’ve seen it adapted across many traditions. The main intention is to take time to prayerfully meditate on the presence of the Divine in the previous day/week/month/year. His original version is not great for use across traditions, so I present an adapted version below.
Take time to become aware of God’s presence.
Review your day/week/month/year with gratitude towards the Divine.
Please pay attention to your emotions, name them, acknowledge them, and thank them. Your emotions are a gift from the Divine, which might be how the Divine speaks with you.
Choose one thing from your review or your emotions and pray over that. Whichever thing seems to be speaking to you, allow the Divine to speak to you through it at this moment.
Turn towards tomorrow. Pay attention to your emotions as you look forward to the next day. And allow your emotions to lead to a prayer for tomorrow.
Take at least 10 minutes to try this at least once this week.
Take time to journal about your beliefs and your time you took with the spiritual practice. We offer you some questions here that might be useful:
What does Jesus as Lord mean to you?
What do you imagine resisting evil should look like?
How have you seen God on the move this week?
