Student Government at Arlington High School is composed of students from grades 9-12 who are elected each Spring by their classmates. The purpose of the Student Government is to support the mission of Arlington High School, represent the students of Arlington High School by advocating for their needs, and unify the student body through social activities and community service opportunities. The Student Council meets bi-weekly as an entire group to discuss and approve ideas that are formulated and planned by different committees within the council. These committees meet at different times throughout a two-week cycle and then bring ideas to the bi-weekly Student Council Meetings to be approved and later implemented. A subset of Arlington High School's Student Government is Class Council's which function as independent units from the Student Council, advocating for the needs of their respective classes and organizing small-scale events often tailored more toward their grade, such as underclassmen semi-formal, junior prom, and senior prom.
If you want to be involved in Student Council, but DON'T want the responsibility of running for or holding a position, then you can still attend the bi-weekly meetings and share your ideas during the "Public Comments" section of the meetings! You can also check out other ways to contact us here. We would love to hear your input!
If you ARE interested in running for a position, elections are generally held in the Spring, and you can reach out to the advisor, Mr. McKnight (pmcknight@arlington.k12.ma.us). The election process generally requires signatures from classmates, recommendations from teachers, and a speech read in front of your respective class.
The Student Council consists of:
4 Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer) who are all upperclassmen
4 Student Representatives from each class
The Vice-President of every class council is also part of the Student Council
Class Council consists of:
4 Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer)
Class officers are members of the class voted in only by members of each respective class
As mentioned above each Class Council Vice President also serves on Student Council
