AMC 8 Scores are in! Individual score reports should go out to student emails Friday evening, Jan 31st, 2025
We had several outstanding scores! We rarely see scores of 20 or higher, but this year we had THREE of them, with William Zhao scoring 20, Michael Liu scoring 22, and Olivia Lai scoring a super-impressive 23, only the second time we've had someone over 22 in the last 10 school years !!!
NEWS FLASH! Chloe Zhang's score report was just forwarded to me. She got a 24. !! The Gibbs team is doing amazing things!
The average for Gibbs was 10.9 and for Ottoson was 12.6, among students who took it at those schools, plus students who reported their scores from taking it elsewhere. We had several students taking them at other schools. Below are the top 40% of known scores across the two schools. Special congratulations to Chloe Zhang, Olivia Lai, Michael Liu and William Zhao for their excellent scores of 20 or higher, a rare feat!
I'm familiar with most of the names below through Math Team, but it's good to see some new names in the high scorers list as well, including Jackson Jedinak, Hugo Le Roux and Evelina Missiuro.
Green indicates Gibbs students. To the right is a historical analysis of our averages and top scores.
Ottoson IMLEM team, Meet #3 results
Our top individual scorers across all 5 rounds of the January 9th IMLEM contest at Ottoson were:
Regular Michael Liu, with 15 of 15 right
Alternates Aidan Macinta and Iris Clarke-Lauer, with 14 of 15 right (I shoulda had them as regulars!),
and Fill-in regular Locke Elledge, with 13 of 15
Well done!
In our cluster, we finished 4th behind the Lexingtons, and Winchester. I added a column of "Missed problems" to give some perspective, since the 216 max score is not so round, so it can give some idea how much we have to improve to get up to McCall (Winchester) and Clarke (Lexington), who have been dominating. Total score makes it look like we're not far behind, but in reality we'll need significant improvements, cutting out 2/3 of our incorrect problems to get to their level. That means we have work to do!
Still, we should be proud to be consistently just ahead of the "pack" in our cluster... 3rd in the 1st meet, and 4th in the 2nd and 3rd meets.
We've done VERY well in the team rounds! We're the only team other than Clarke and McCall to get a perfect team round score in both meets 2 and 3. Overall, Winchester has 3 perfect team rounds, and we're tied with Clark for next best team rounds, with Sharon just 4 points behind us.
Among the 10 teams in Cluster 14 that completed the first IMLEM, Arlington finished 3rd, with 186 of a possible 216. Only McCall (Winchester) and Clarke (Lexington) were ahead of us. See the scores by category below.
The AMC 8 math contest was held January 18th in Gibbs and Ottoson. Here is a video review of the first 15 problems.
Below are the top scorers at each school.
Of 36 Ottoson students, the 16 listed below scored above the 8th grade average of 12.6.
Of 11 Gibbs students, the 5 listed below scored above the Gibbs average of 9.1.
The Ottoson Team for the Mathcounts Chapter contest on Feb 3, 2024 will be: Michael Liu, Sean Yin, Avery Kim, Yiyan Shen
The other 8 Ottoson students competing as individuals at the Chapter Meet are: Atharva Agarwal, Prathamesh Gupta, Nakul Viswanathan, Nozomi Vega, Charis Woo, Sonja Toutchkine, Evan Campisano, Steven Yan
The Gibbs Mathcounts team: Sloane Miller, Nithya Karthik, Larry Glina, Mason Zhou
Our 3rd and final simulated Mathcounts contest was the actual 2024 School Round, held on January 16th.
Here are the top scorers in each school. I've listed only the total score of the Sprint and Target Rounds combined.
Our first simulated Mathcounts contest of this school year was held on November 14th. 6 Gibbs students and 24 Ottoson students took part.
Here are the top half of the scorers in each school, plus one. A perfect score in the Mathcounts individual rounds is 30 for Sprint and 16 for Target for a maximum combined score of 46. Anything above half of that is excellent.
Ottoson's top scorers:
The other 11 Ottoson students scored 21 or lower
Here are the top Gibbs scorers:
Our 2nd simulated Mathcounts contest was held on December 15th & 19th, 2023. 7 Gibbs students and 22 Ottoson students took part. Below are the top scorers from each school. This was a harder test, somewhere between a Chapter and State Contest level of difficulty, which is evidenced by the lower scores.
The average score for Gibbs was 15.1. The average for 7th grade was 18.8 and the average for 8th grade was 21.1.
A perfect score would be 46, which is rarely achieved even by the best students in the state.
Our top scorer overall was Gibbs student Michael Liu, with an excellent score of 19.
Sean Yin was the top Ottoson scorer with a score of 16.
Four students were right behind with scores of 15: Harry Liu, Lupin Yu, Avery Kim and Aly Lay
Congratulations to all for excellent scores!
Our overall average was up slightly compared to previous years, with Ottoson averaging 11.8, and Gibbs averaging 10.
We held the individual rounds of the Mathcounts School Contest on Tuesday, Jan 24th in place of our regular practice. In general, anything 20 or above is a very good score. The max possible individual score is 46 points. The Sprint Round has 30 problems worth one point each (30 max points). The Target Round has 8 problems worth 2 points each (16 max points).
Our top scorers from Ottoson were:
33 points - Harry Liu
31 points - Lupin Yu
27 points - Sean Yin
27 points - Tyler Pajerowski
26 points - Avery Kim
23 points - Nakul Viswanathan
22 points - Nozomi Vega
21 points - Atharva Agarwal
There were 10 other students between 12 and 20 points
Our top scorers from Gibbs were:
30 points - Michael Liu
20 points - Sumaya Razak
The other 6 students were at 18 or below.
IMLEM Meet #4
Finally all results were reported for the 4th IMLEM meet, and well... WE DID IT!
Our first win in an IMLEM meet! We edged out Clarke by just 2 points. Well done, team!
