The Arlington Middle School Math Teams (AMSMT) are made up of the Ottoson Math Team (OMT) and the Gibbs Math Team (GMT)
We meet Tuesdays from 6:20pm to 8:20pm in the High School, from mid-September through mid-May.
Quick News (see Calendar or Contest News for details):
WEDNESDAY meetings have begun! We held our first Wednesday practice on October 1st. We'll hold one every Wednesday when there's school, in the same rooms as Tuesday, covering the same material.
Bring a calculator to practice each week. Laptops should only be brought on weeks when IMLEM contests are held.
See our Calendar page for practice times and events.
The Gibbs and Ottoson Math Teams help you explore new ways of thinking about math, so you can:
Learn how to learn math more easily, especially in future math and science classes in high school and college,
Have more fun with math,
Do well in competitions, if that's a goal of yours
Math Team is your only path to qualifying to represent your school in the Mathcounts Chapter (regional) Contest, usually in Medford on the first Saturday in February (from which you could go on to state and national contests and win prizes). All other math contests available to us are open to any students who want to sign up, even those outside Math Team.
There are two levels of Math Team membership
Non-competitive members: Come as much or as little as you like, and relax as you explore new math concepts with no pressure. The only requirement is to be respectful and supportive of other members.
Competitive members: We'll train you to do well in math competitions, and consider you for inclusion on the school's Mathcounts Chapter contest team. You'll be expected to attend most meetings. Frequency of attendance is one of several factors in determining the Mathcounts teams.
We'll achieve these goals in the same way for both member levels, with some teaching and some problem solving practice, designed to help you more deeply understand math concepts.
We strive for a style of learning and understanding described in the 5th paragraph of this excellent article by Art of Problem Solving founder Richard Rusczyk.
The coach is parent volunteer Jon McIntyre, a former USA Math Olympiad qualifier. READ MORE in this Math Team Overview.
See the Calendar section for details on meetings, which include a teaching session designed for newer members, followed by a practice session for all.

New members, please read our New Member Orientation Guide
We accept all students of all abilities, as we want to help all students discover the joys of math. If your scores are low, you will have to commit to doing a certain level of work at home in order to stay in Math Team. We'll be implementing this "minimum scoring or work ethic" policy to ensure we have room for everyone who is serious about it, which will allow us to have more effective practices.
If you can't make it on Tuesdays, you can still "play along from home" with the at-home learnings on the "Assigned" page.
To sign up, fill in this signup form, and read the orientation guide linked from that form. If you have questions, email the coach at jonathan.a.mcintyre@gmail.com
