Professor Angelina Anani, an Associate Professor of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona, is not only shaping the future of her students but is also on a mission to redefine the mining industry itself. With over 11 years of experience in research and teaching, Dr. Anani is skilled in modeling and improving mining systems. Her research focuses on areas such as mine planning, production scheduling, sustainable mining design, equipment reliability, tunneling, energy and water efficiency, and using machine learning in mining.
Dr. Anani has taught at three universities in two countries and currently teaches both graduate and undergraduate mining engineering courses. She is an active member of professional organizations like the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the Society of Mining Professors, and Women In Mining (WIM).
Professor Anani teaches with passion and enthusiasm, creating a relaxed and open classroom environment that encourages questions. She was thrilled for her students to go on a mining tour at the Freeport-McMoRan mine in Sahuarita, Arizona, where she urged them to ask the guides for more insights. Both undergraduate and graduate students attended, learning to connect their classroom knowledge with real-world mining practices. Dr. Anani's professional and approachable style made the experience memorable, blending technical skills with discussions on sustainability and ethics to prepare students for future challenges.

Dr. Anani stands out for her ability to incorporate AI and virtual reality into her teaching, giving students hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools in mining. By integrating these technologies, she not only enhances their understanding of complex mining processes but also equips them with valuable skills for their future careers. Her approach provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with the latest advancements in the industry, preparing them to lead in a tech-driven field. He observes, “Angelina’s teaching goes beyond imparting knowledge. She instills a mindset in her students one that is both analytical and conscientious. She’s training not just engineers but future leaders who will carry the industry forward.” Said Dr Tenorio.
As one of the few women in her field, Anani is passionate about advancing women's representation in mining. She actively mentors’ female students and professionals through partnerships with organizations like Women in Mining Arizona.
“I work with groups like Women in Mining because I know the barriers that exist for women in this industry. My mission is to break down these walls, provide mentorship, and create opportunities,” said Dr Anani.
Dr. Tenorio underscores the impact of her mentorship:
“Angelina isn’t just opening doors for women in mining; she’s building pathways. Her dedication to mentoring young women in the field is creating a ripple effect that is sure to influence the industry’s future.” Said Tenorio
Dr. Mohammed Waqas, an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Mining Department, echoed similar sentiments, noting the positive shift in gender diversity. “When I look at the current number of students in my classes, I have more females now, which is good to see. Women are working hard and performing just as well as their male counterparts in the industry’’. Said Dr Waqas
He also emphasized Dr. Anani’s role in supporting students through her mentorship and research.
“Dr. Anani has been deeply involved in various research committees, ensuring students produce work that contributes meaningfully to mining’s future.” Said Waqas
Dr. Anani has been an active member of several key committees, shaping research on critical aspects of the mining industry. She has served on graduate thesis committees, guiding students in areas like mining technology, sustainability, and environmental impact. Her involvement extends to sustainable mining research, focusing on waste reduction, water management, and clean energy alternatives. She is also passionate about advancing gender diversity in mining, contributing to committees aimed at increasing women’s representation, such as Women in Mining Arizona and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). Additionally, Dr. Anani collaborates with industry advisory boards and research partners, working on projects that explore the use of VR, AR, and digital twins for enhanced mining efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
Beyond the classroom, Anani is an advocate for gender equity policies, striving to ensure women hold key roles in decision-making, innovation, and policy in the mining sector. Her advocacy is part of a larger mission to make the industry more inclusive.

Dr. Anani is dedicated to increasing female representation in the field through mentoring programs with organizations like Women in Mining Arizona. Additionally, she is advancing the use of emerging technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and digital twins to enhance mining education and operations.
“Sustainability in mining isn’t optional it’s our responsibility, “My research aims to make mining more efficient while reducing its ecological footprint. It’s about leaving the planet better for future generations.” Said Dr Anani
Dr. Tenorio views Anani’s work as transformative for the mining industry, stating,
“Angelina is reimagining what responsible mining can look like. Her work in sustainability has the potential to set new standards, proving that environmental care and industry demands don’t have to be in conflict.”
Old standards in mining often prioritized profit over environmental or social impact, relying on outdated, resource-intensive practices. Anani is challenging these norms by integrating sustainability, waste reduction, water conservation, and energy efficiency into mining operations. Through emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data analytics, she is setting a new benchmark for responsible mining that balances industry demands with environmental stewardship."
Looking ahead, Anani plans to integrate artificial intelligence and data analytics into mining processes, striving to create smarter methods that adapt to environmental needs.
"We’re at the cusp of a technological revolution in mining. By incorporating AI and data science, we can drastically improve efficiency and sustainability. I want my students and colleagues to be part of this shift,” said Dr Anani. Professor Anani incorporates AI into her work to improve mining processes and make them more sustainable. By integrating artificial intelligence, she aims to enhance efficiency in mining operations, such as optimizing resource extraction and reducing waste. AI tools help predict patterns, manage operations more effectively, and even monitor environmental impacts in realtime. This technology allows for smarter decision-making, making mining operations more efficient and minimizing their environmental footprint. Anani believes that AI will play a key role in the future of mining, making it both more sustainable and cost-effective.
Reflecting on her journey, Professor Anani recalls how mentors in her native Ghana inspired her to see mining as a force for positive change. Her decision to join the University of Arizona stemmed from her desire to influence a new generation of mining engineers and researchers.
“Coming to Arizona allowed me to not only teach but to become part of a community dedicated to advancing mining on multiple fronts,” Anani shares. “I’m proud of the work we’re doing here and optimistic about the future we’re building.”
Dr. Tenorio further highlights their professional camaraderie and shared dedication to advancing digital mining, especially through modern technological applications such as digital twin technology, virtual reality, and augmented reality.
“Angelina’s expertise in these areas is inspiring. It’s pushing boundaries in mining education and opening collaborative pathways in research,” he explains. He recalls a memorable experience at a South Dakota conference, where they presented complementary research, further strengthening their professional relationship and mutual respect. “We’re not in competition,” Tenorio reflects. “We’re summing our strengths and advancing together in ways that reflect our department’s goals and our global perspective on mining’s future.”
Dr. Waqas, who has known Anani since 2013, shared his thoughts on her professional character, saying,
“She’s flexible and easy to work with, but she’s also committed to meeting deadlines and ensuring her students stay on track. She understands the importance of meeting industry expectations and holds her team to high standards.” He added,
“While I’ve never seen her angry, I can understand her frustration if deadlines aren’t met, especially when it could affect the credibility of the program with industry partners.”
Anani’s commitment to reshaping mining goes beyond conventional practices. She is determined to challenge norms and confront any resistance with resilience.
“The mining industry has a long way to go in terms of inclusivity and sustainable practices, but I see the willingness to change. That’s why I’m here to push those boundaries,” Dr.Anani affirms.
“Mining is foundational to our society, but we have to be mindful of how we do it,” Anani concludes. “The future I envision is one where mining can coexist with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”
With her combination of technical expertise, leadership, and vision for change, Professor Angelina Anani is undeniably breaking new ground.
