We know we are made of matter (what astronomers call "baryonic matter"), but how much of this stuff is in the universe? How did it all form in the first place? How do we verify what is predicted actually matches our observed universe?
In this Unit, we will introduce the building blocks of atoms and the relevant processes that make/break the elements we see around us. Surprisingly, the processes we will talk about all occurred in the first few minutes of the beginning of the universe!
There are many aspects of how the atoms formed and I'm sure you have a lot of questions. At this time, write down a question or two you have about atoms and how the elements formed in the early universe. Some guiding questions to get you started include:
How do atoms form from smaller atoms?
Were all the elements we have in the universe formed in the beginning?
Besides atom formation, what other processes were occurring in the early universe?
Post your question on this jamboard. Use a blue sticky note and make a new slide if you need!
Now it's time to get started! The content is divided into these four sub-sections. When you go through them, be sure to go in the order as listed. Units build on each other!
