Weekly Notices

Last week of 2022!!!!.

Holey Moley! Production was terrific last week. Thank you for all your support and being a terrific audience!

Finishing the year with a blast, we are planning a Summer Fun Camp (but no sleepovers!!) this week. See below for details.

Things to know for Week 9

  • Summer Fun Camp days: Tuesday and Wednesday this week. For these two days the children do not have to wear their school uniform. They will need their school hat though and have sunscreen on before they arrive at school as we will be spending most of the day outside.

  • Togs & Towels needed: on Tues/Wed too, including rash top or t-shirt. We hope to include a DIY water slide on our Camp days too.

  • Shared Morning Tea Tuesday: we are going to have a shared morning tea on Tuesday, so we are asking for each family to bring a small plate of food to share.

  • Can we borrow:

      • any small tents that are suitable for the children to put up

      • big, clean plastic sheets (e.g. mattress bags, polythene, etc) that we can use for water slides

      • you (or someone suitable)- to help with tents, fires (yes, really!), fun, etc on Tues and/or Wed morning (anytime you can from 9 till 1pm)

  • Sexuality Education: we have been working through our Health Education programme this term and this week we will be covering "My Body Parts". We will be learning to identify and correctly name body parts, including private body parts.

It has been another interesting and challenging year but we were fortunate to have an amazing bunch of kids who showed resilience and made us smile everyday. Thank you to all of you for your continued support, and of course, we will see you all again next year!!

Ka kite ano,

Shelley, Deb and Andrea

Things you need to know for Week 7 .

We have been a hive of activity in Teretere, getting ready for our first ever school production. I hope you all have it on your calendar for Tuesday 6th December. Gates open 5pm for dinner, children will be called at 5.45 to get ready. Exciting....

Things to know for Week 7:

  • Reading: we are not following our normal learning programme including reading at the moment. We do still do things on some days, but it is likely your child will not have a reading book. It's a good chance to share some stories form home together.

  • Library books: are now all due to be returned before the end of the year. Children can drop them off to the normal boxes in class.

  • Clothes to wear for production: please see the table that is hopefully attached below! ALL ITEMS TO BE NAME-NO EXCEPTIONS! Please put them in a named bag too.

N.B. You might need to expand it to see all. There are 2 rows and all children attending the show are on there.

That's it. Stay safe and be happy,

Andrea, Shelley and Deb.

Term 4 Week 5 Notices

Wow- here we are almost half way through this term already!

Thankyou for supporting our school swimming by ensuring your child had their swimming gear each day. The children absolutely loved it and huge progress was made over the 8 lessons we had. A huge thankyou to the parents and grandparents who came and helped and drove emergency vehicles. Without your support we are unable to offer these programmes.

Now swimming is over, our focus shifts to Production. Hope you all have this marked in your calendars (Tuesday 6 December)! It is expected that all children take part and are available on the night. This will be a major focus for the next few weeks. We will require some parent help to come and help the children make their costumes so keep an eye out for an email when we are doing this- we would love some extra pairs of hands for the costume creating stage of production.

Last term a group of children made and sold Kawakawa Balm as part of the Market Day project and inquiry learning. Over $500 was made from this project. After conversations with parents and Senior Leadership, it has been decided that the profit from this project be invested and used when they are Year 8's for activities such as Year 8 end of year dinner or a 'big day out ' class trip (or other similar activities that may be running by then!). Over the coming years they can watch their small investment grow and get to benefit from it in a few years time.

Paid Union Meetings (23 November 2-3pm) we would appreciate it if you could pick up your child at 12:45 pm so we are able to attend this meeting. If you are unable to pick up at this time,, they will be supervised in the hall for the last part of the day. To help us with the organisation of the afternoon we need you to complete this form for each child. We can't let your children leave school without this information.

Week 10 Notices

We have almost made it- one day to go folks! I get the feeling from everyone, the term was one week too long! We have had very high number of absences this week with lots of viruses doing the rounds. We have continued to keep the spaces well ventilated and continuous reinforcing of hand washing and hand sanitiser to reduce transmission. We continue to appreciate you keeping unwell children at home- this helps keep teachers and other children 'virus free'.

We have enjoyed getting outside this week to do skipping. The children have really enjoyed doing this and with regular opportunities, have improved so much.

Our mid year reports are now on Hero. Make sure you check these out and make a comment. Learning Conversations are in Week 1 next term. Please keep an eye out for details about making a time. It is expected that parents attend. School will be finishing at 1.15pm on Wednesday of the first week, with learning conversations starting at 1.30pm.

We have Whaea Emma starting with us at the start of the Term. Emma is a 3rd Year UC student on her final placement. She will be mentored by Andrea and based with her Ako class.

We are after items that would be suitable for puppet making (eg old but clean socks) If you have anything we would love to use it as part of our puppet theatre in learning through play.

On Monday it is our school 'Jumping June') even though it is now July). The children have loved doing skipping throughout the day and with so much practise, have improved a lot. We will continue with skipping as a PE focus next week while the engagement in this area is high.

Week 8 Notices

Happy Matariki everyone. As this is a very first for New Zealand, it is a lovely time to create your own traditions for this holiday. Matariki is all about family, friends and kai so plenty you can do with that.

Steve our caretaker was wondering if there was anyone in the class community who may have access to a fencing post. This is for the birdhouse installation. He went to Mitre10 and they are $150. If anyone has one or has a contact where we could get it cheaper this would be much appreciated. It needs to be ideally a 2.7m post (H4 treated, 100 x 100sq mm). Let us know if you are able to help.

Bella has lost her half zip merino. It has been missing a couple of weeks. It is a size 6 or 8 and has a named tag.

Next Friday (July 1st) is Non uniform day. Could each child please bring an item for quiz night hampers as a donation.

Next Friday is also our Matariki Night here at school. Hopefully you all have this in your calendars and we will see you all here at school for this very special evening. Reminder that all child should have brought a a clean plastic milk bottle, preferably with the stickers removed. We will be making lanterns for the matariki evening. We will be making the lanterns next week so if you haven't sent one, please do so on Monday

BLOG POST: Shelley has written a blog post about structured literacy. Please follow the link and read about this programme. It will also help you better understand the information we will share with you in the coming weeks as part of our reporting.

Week 7 Notices

The end of the Term is fast approaching! Thank you everyone for keeping children at home when they are unwell. We have a number of bugs doing the rounds currently so really appreciate you keeping your child at home until they recover. It keeps everyone else well.

This week has been an assessment week for reporting at mid year. Your child may or may not come home with a book depending assessment currently being undertaken by your child's structured literacy teacher. Things return to normal next week.

SKIPPING ROPES: 'Jumping June' is well underway. This is a reinvention of 'Jump Rope for Heart' which you may have done at school! We are going to have this as a focus during learning through play and P.E so if your child has a skipping rope at home they can bring it to school to use. Please ensure it is named though. These will be kept in their bag.

BLOG POST: Shelley has written a blog post about structured literacy. Please follow the link and read about this programme. It will also help you better understand the information we will share with you in the coming weeks as part of our reporting.

MILK BOTTLE: For matariki night on July 1 we require each child to bring a clean plastic milk bottle, preferably with the stickers removed. We will be making lanterns for the matariki evening. These need to be brought to school by Thursday 23 June.

Week 6 Notices

What a whirlwind week. Hope everyone made the most of the extra long weekend and had time to recharge a little.

It has been an exciting week at school. On Wednesday we had Senior Constable Jim Manning visiting as our community cop and the Playhouse Theatre.

Here are the key messages from Jim:

  • It is recommended children stay in a booster seat until they 148cm tall. Although this is not law, it is highly recommended for the safety of your child and prevent serious injury caused by the seatbelt.

  • Children should travel in the back seat also to avoid serious injury from air bags

  • Always cross at the school crossing and wait for the instruction 'cross now' from the patrol.

  • Cross at pedestrian crossings and at lights when they are there

  • 'Stop, Look and Listen before you cross the street. Use your eyes, use your ears before you use your feet'.

Remember children will be copy what you do, so please model the correct behaviour. These are important safety messages to help keep your child safe from injury.

Reading Folders- previous weeks books must be returned and children must have a reading folder to take a new book home.

NO TOYS- toys are not to be brought to school unless its Friday for sharing.

Next Week

House of Science resource arrives. We will be using this as a basis for our science. It is geology based.

Invitation (Week 5 Notices are below)

INVITATION: As part of inquiry the children are investigating 'markets' and we are inviting the children from the space to visit the Lincoln Farmers Market this Saturday between 10am-11am. If you are around please pop down with the children to explore the market. Andrea and Shelley will be there during this time.

There will be a questionnaire to complete while exploring the different stalls and space. If you are not available, it is not a problem.

The questionnaire is below, and includes the children's questions. It can be used at any market, not just the Lincoln one, so feel free to try it out wherever you may be. We'd love to see it!!

Week 5 Notices

Welcome to the end of Week 5. We are officially half way through the term and into winter.....eeekkkk!

Next week is a short week. School is closed on Monday for Queens Birthday and on Tuesday for Teacher Only Day.

On Wednesday we have our School Community officer, Senior Constable Jim Manning visiting. He will be in our space just 'hanging out' with the kids in the morning and then a learning session in the afternoon about road safety. The purpose of this visit is for the children to see the police as people and not necessarily what they see on TV! It is a great opportunity for children to see 'positive policing' and be comfortable approaching an officer in the future if ever required.

On Thursday we have the 'Playhouse Theatre' here at school. They are fantastic and we know the children will just love this live theatre performance. The Teretere teachers are excited to see it too!

Next week there will be two new faces in our space. Marie Craddock (Whaea Marie) will be joining us until the end of Term from the University of Canterbury where she is studying first year education. Andrea will be mentoring her during her placement with us. Kyla is a new student starting Ararira Springs and will be in Teretere 3 (Whaea Shelley's Ako class). We will have a small mihi whakatau on Wednesday morning in class to welcome these people to our space.

As it is now officially winter please ensure your child has a warm layer to wear. If it is not raining, the children are outside at playtimes. Please ensure all school uniform is clearly named.

‘Active Autumn’ is fast coming to an end. During ‘Active Autumn’ the children walk, scooter or bike to school (must wear their high vis vest). Children need 10 signatures on their card to enter the draw for a scooter, helmets and other prizes allocated to our school.

Week 4 Notices

An end to another week. The weeks just seem to be flying by at the moment. We still have a steady stream of illness going through the space with numerous viruses doing the rounds. Again a huge thank you for keeping children at home when unwell. It just helps keep us all a little bit healthier and things ticking along as normal!

Thank you for ensuring children have their reading folder each day. This help us to protect our rather expensive resources as they travel backwards and forwards between home and school. If you have any of these books at home please return them asap. While they are at your place, we can't use them here. Children also need their reading folder to take out a library book. Library day is Monday.

Week 3 Notices

And another week, done and dusted. It has been another week with many children absent . We would like to thank parents for taking the side of caution and keeping children at home if unwell. There are now colds circulating but we really do appreciate everyone keeping these children at home. It allows us to continue as normal here at school.

We hope everyone had the chance to pop in to see our art at the art exhibition. We will be turning the prints and pastel art into calendar art (later this term) so these pieces of art will remain at school for the meantime.

Just a reminder that children do need to bring a reading each day. There have been some books returned damaged that are not in reading folders. The reading folders protect these important resources. Each reading book cost between $12 and $15 to replace. Please ensure books are returned in reading folders. If they do not have a reading folder at school, they will not get a book to bring home.

As our doors and windows are open during the day for ventilation, we ask you to send along their school jacket and cardigan each day. As the weather gets cooler the children will be wearing these inside. Although we have heat pumps, we don’t want to be using these too much as we don’t want to be warming the air for covid bugs!

Kawakawa Balm is still available if you wish to bring a container.

Week 2 Notices

This week we were lucky enough to have Bob Bickerton do a demonstration of ‘Te Ao o Taonga Puoro’. These were traditional Māori instruments which many had been forgotten (how to play and make) until a group of musicians got together. The children enjoyed listening to the different sounds and identifying the birds they were imitating. Bob also told traditional stories and accompanied them with these traditional instruments to add sound effects.

You will have seen the email earlier this week regarding swimming lessons. It was a tough decision and so much organisation had gone into this. However for the health and safety of everyone concerned, it was better to postpone swimming until the ‘covid situation’ is less of an issue. We are looking at swimming in Term 4 at this stage but no details to share as yet. We are still very much in the ‘reorganisation and nothing confirmed’ stage. A huge thankyou to those parents who offered to help- hopefully you will still be available later in the year should we be swimming then.

As our doors and windows are open during the day for ventilation, we ask you to send along their school jacket and cardigan each day. As the weather gets cooler the children will be wearing these inside. Although we have heat pumps, we don’t want to be using these too much as we don’t want to be warming the air for covid bugs!

Remember to pop along to see the Pop Up Art Exhibition next Monday and Tuesday. The Hall will be open from 8.30 - 5pm both days.

‘Active Autumn’ where the children walk, scooter or bike to school (must wear their high vis vest) runs for all of May. Children need 10 signatures on their card to enter the draw for a scooter, helmets and other prizes allocated to our school.

Can everyone please check their child's cardigan. Maya has lost hers and it may have gone home in someones bag. May be labelled 'Shakes'. Thankyou

Welcome to Term 2- Week 1 Notices

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome back everyone to Term 2. We hope everyone had an enjoyable break without any interruptions by Covid! We have been impressed how the children have settled back into school again and we have picked up where we left off.

Swimming lessons at Selwyn Aquatics Centre: Monday 16th May to Friday 27th May (Week 3)

Our junior school is about to undertake the national Swim Safe programme, involving learning to swim, water safety and survival. This programme will take place during school hours (between 12pm-3pm) Monday – Friday for two weeks, starting on Monday 16th May for our year 0-2 learners.

The New Zealand curriculum specifies that all children should get the opportunity, through school, to learn basic aquatic skills by the end of year 6. It is important to combine learning to swim with water safety, to build a positive water safety culture in New Zealand.

During these two weeks, please ensure your child brings a clearly named towel and togs/swimwear for swimming in a separate bag. Please name all items, especially swimwear, goggles (if required), school uniform items, shoes and underwear!

You are also not expected to pay another activity fee for term two, on top of the swimming lessons. Whilst this is a lot of money for some families to pay, if you are in a financial position to pay for another child, please see Trine in the office.

Please fill in this survey from Selwyn Swim School, regarding your child’s current swimming level. This is so that they can continue to build on the skills your child has already made at any other prior or present swim schools. Please complete this on/before Monday 9th May.

We will require parent helpers to come on the bus and/or meet us at the venue. We need 4 parents per day (one parent driving their car as an emergency vehicle). Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate preschoolers. Please let your child’s ako teacher know if you or a grandparent are able to help. Unfortunately we will be unable to go swimming if we do not have enough helpers!

The cost for the 10 lessons (and transport cost) is $50 and will be added to your school account.

  • Kawakawa Balm-There is still a small amount of Kawakawa Balm available if you wish to bring a container.

  • Scholastic Book order close on 1 July but there is a recommendation from Scholastics to have your order in by 20 May.

  • Selwyn District Council ‘Active Autumn’- Selwyn District Council are running a campaign to get children scootering, biking or walking to school. They each have a card which gets signed by the Ako teacher if the scooter, bike or walk to school with their high vis vest on. They need 10 signatures to go into the draw for prizes, including a scooter and helmets. If you would normally drive your child to school, you can drop them off half way to complete the trip on foot and this will also count.

  • Autumn Leaves-We require some dry autumn leaves of interesting shapes and colours for our class based Curiosity Clubs. Please start sending these along as soon as possible. Might make a lovely walk home through the reserves to collect these perhaps!

See you again, Week 10 .

The penultimate week has now finished. We have a 4 day week this coming week- No school on Friday. But it will be 4 fun filled days!

Things to know for Week 11:

  • Reading: we have been updating assessments in the last week, which is why no new reading books came home. Just FYI.

  • Kawakawa balm inquiry group: children who have been in the kawakawa inquiry group need to bring a small (think typical lip balm size) named container this week so they can take home some kawakawa balm. It needs to be brought to school by Wednesday. Maybe a little wasabi container or similar?

  • Sports Spectacular: we are concluding PE for the term th an onsite Fundamental Skills Sports Spectacular on Tuesday afternoon. Please make sure sunhats, and drink bottles are at school and that suitable footwear for sports on the (possibly wet) grass are worn. Thanks.

  • Bricks for Kids: our turn is this Thursday. Yay!

If we don't get to see you in person, have a lovely Easter and enjoy some time with your tamariki these school holidays. Take care and be happy.

Andrea, Shelley and Deb.

Week 9 was fine.

We are still staying fairly healthy in our hub. Some of us (teachers and children have been household contacts and some have become positive while isolating, but so far no-one has come down with 'it' while at school. Yay and thank you!

Things to know for Week 10:

  • Welcome Back Whaea Deb: Whaea Deb has stayed safe and is back to school this week. Yay!

  • Nothing else!: I don't think there is anything else for this week!

  • Week 11: in week 11 we have 2 events scheduled. An onsite sports spectacular (no parents still sadly), and on the last day, Bricks for Kids, which is always a favourite!

What are we learning next?

Maths: Algebra (patterns) and Geometry (shapes)

Health/PE: Fundamental movement skills

Inquiry : Connections - children opted into 3 groups

Environment- making Kawakawa balm

People- painted stones to hide and making calendars for Lincoln Community Care

Technology- Children's chosen problem to solve- We don't want lake flies all over our buildings.

Writing : Descriptions

The Arts: Visual Art- Oil pastels, printmaking and 3D paper collage

Enjoy your Sunday, and stay safe everyone.

Ngā mihi nui,

Deb, Shelley and Andrea.

On your skates Week 8 .

We are creeping towards the end of term now. Some 'fruits of our learning' are starting to become apparent, the end results should be amazing especially in Inquiry and Visual Art learning.

Things to know for Week 9:

  • Reading folders: many children are having trouble remembering to bring their reading folders (with or without books) daily. We do reading every day, so it is imperative that these come to school pease. We ask that you as caregivers and parents support your child in this task please.

  • Safety vests: must be worn. The blunt reason is that in Lincoln in the past, there have been fatalities of students due to traffic accidents going to and from school. We do not want this to recur, so please ensure your child wears their safety vest TO and FROM school every day, regardless of their mode of transport. The school carpark would have to be one the the most dangerous places!

  • No toys at school: Parents- please check bags to ensure these are not coming to school, as many still are. The ONLY exception is Fridays for news/sharing, when they are to be put in the relevant box in class for the day.

  • Thank you: for your vigilance in keeping sick children at home. We are doing well in keeping germs out of our space.

  • Whaea Deb: will not be at school this week, as one of her family members has tested Covid positive. Whaea Shelley and Whaea Andrea will be there (for consistency) along with relievers.

That's it. Stay safe and be happy,

Andrea, Shelley and Deb.

Week 7 is on it's way to heaven (no offense intended!!)

Apologies if my use of heaven has ruffled any feathers. I hope it has not. Seven is tricky to rhyme with!

Things to know for Week 8:

  • Golf: we had our first session of Golf last week, and have another this week. It is fun learning new skills and practising perseverance!

  • Community Food Pantry/Pātaka Kai: you may have seen on the school whānau Facebook page or the Lincoln Community page that we now have a Pātaka Kai for the whole community. The purpose of this is to reduce fruit and vegetable waste, and share excess produce within the community.

We in Teretere will look after this, including the children helping to check and dispose of food that is deteriorating, cleaning it, etc. If you haven't already, join the FB group and check it out on your next trip past school. It is attached to the fence, on the carpark side.

  • Hybrid learning: has not yet been activated as our case numbers are low (still zero for Teretere!!)

What are we learning next?

Maths: Addition & Subtraction continues

Health/PE: Golf in Schools

Inquiry : Connections - term long foci- Environment, People and Technology (non digital)

Writing : Recounts

The Arts: Visual Art- Oil pastels, printmaking and 3D paper collage

Enjoy your Sunday, and stay safe everyone.

Ngā mihi nui,

Deb, Shelley and Andrea.

Hit the bricks Week 6.

We have those 6 weeks gone? That means we are closer to the end of this 11 week term than the beginning- wow! Oh well, onward and upward!

Things to know:

  • Reading books: we appear to be missing quite a few school reading books. Can you please check school bags, reading folders and any other places they could be and send them back ASAP please. Currently, we do not have enough books for all children on some days.

  • Teacher Only day: is this Friday. School is closed for children.

  • Hot Cross Buns fundraiser: run by Te Hapori Tautoko for the benefit of our school. Orders close (via Kindo) this Thursday.

What are we learning is coming up next?

Maths: Addition & Subtraction continues

Writing : Recounts

The Arts: Visual Art choices- pastels, printmaking and 3D paper collage/sculpture

Week 5 is no longer live!

Wow, half way through the term already. Where did that time go? On to week 6 while most of us are still coming to school- YAY!

Things to know for Week 6:

  • Cardboard boxes- can you please save and send along any cardboard boxes, like cereal boxes, so that we can repurpose them.

  • Sick? Stay home- pleeeeease! I think the reasons by now are obvious :)

  • Reading (Literacy)- a few of you have asked similar questions so here are some FAQ responses for everyone-

      • "The book is too easy" - it should be. Books are worked on for several days before they come home and your child should be able to read it quickly, without any help at all. The aim then is to read it many times, each time getting more fluent (smooth and read at talking speed).

      • "They've had this book before" - we have assessed all children and for many, we are going back a little to fill in gaps that they have. Once mastered, we'll move them on.

      • "They can read those words" - great. Now we need them to be able to independently sound out and write those words was well. It is a Literacy approach- that includes reading and writing together.

      • "Homework worksheets?" - in line with our school's philosophy around homework (as explained by Claire in this blog post ), we are not sending home extra homework this year. We recommend daily reading of books that interest your child. Reading with and reading to them is great. And of course them reading books themselves is great too.

  • Hybrid learning- is coming soon. We are setting up an online learning option that enables home learning to mirror class learning wherever possible. This will be for use when school is open but your child is unable to attend.

What are we learning next?

Maths: Addition & Subtraction continues

Health/PE: Relationships and class citizenship, Gross Motor Skills (Stability, Locomotion, Throwing)

Inquiry : Connections - term long foci- Environment, People and Technology (non digital)

Writing : Recounts

The Arts: Visual Art- Oil pastels, printmaking and 3D paper collage

--------------------------------

Enjoy your Sunday, and stay safe everyone.

Nga mihi nui,

Deb, Shelley and Andrea.

Week 4 is no more.

We have had a lovely, settled week. All normal routines are now underway, which makes it easier for all of us to know what to expect each day. (And yes, I have managed to keep the rhyming title theme going! So far so good!)

Things to know:

  • Reading groups: have now started. As mentioned last week, we are following an approach where skills are taught then applied to texts (reading and writing). Reading books will only come home once fluency and independence of the skills has been reached. For most children, (but not all) this will be once a week.

  • Inquiry- connecting with people: Can you please let us know if you have any connections to people who help others in our community, who we might be able to connect with. Their involvement under current conditions could involve answering our questions, sharing photos or a zoom call (unless you have any other insightful yet safe ideas!)

Week 3 is compleeeee-te!

Ok, not the best rhyme in the title but the warm morning has hindered my thinking!! We are really getting to know the children now, which is lovely. They are a great bunch of children!

Things to know for Week 4:

  • Meet the teacher evening- is of course cancelled for 2022. Instead we have made a video recording as if you were there. This will be available on the blog shortly- watch this space.

  • Cardboard boxes- can you please save and send along any cardboard boxes, like cereal boxes, so that we can repurpose them in Visual Art.

  • Student details sheets- please check your child's bag if you have not seen this. It would be great to get them all back this week please.

  • Sick? Stay home- pleeeeease! I think the reasons by now are obvious :)

  • Reading/Writing (Literacy)- is starting up this week. We are continuing in our school's journey into better teaching practice and so we will be following a Structured Literacy approach for all Teretere learners this year. Many of you will already be familiar with it, but for those that are not, it most simply means learning to read and write using sound/letter knowledge (the code of the English language) rather than learning whole words by memory. So 'sound it out' is a key phrase! More info is included in the above mentioned parent info video we are preparing. Feel free to ask any of us about it at any time.

What are we learning next?

Enjoy your Saturday & Sunday, and stay safe everyone.

Week 2 is through!

Two weeks down already- wow! We are starting to settle in now and we have been working to ensure our routines get well sorted so that we can be set up for a smooth flowing year.

Things to know:

  • Sharing day: is going to be Friday. Children can choose to bring an item to school which they will talk about to the rest of their ako class in the afternoon. Items are not able to be accessed during the day- they will be put into a container for safe storage first thing in the morning.

  • Prepping for possible home learning: In preparation for possible home learning in the future, it would be a great idea to see if you can find and have ready some dice and counters (like those in a board game or anything else little that can be moved and counted easily). We are giving you a heads up now, so you can be ready 'just in case'.

  • Naming clothing: We have already started getting lost property left behind at the end of the day. If your child's things are clearly named, it greatly increases the chance of them getting back to you. For example, on Tuesday, I had to take a new condition size 6 school jacket to the office's lost property bin. It had no name I could find on it anywhere. That's worth $88!!!

What are we learning is coming up next?

Maths: Addition & Subtraction

Health/PE: Sunsmart, Gross Motor Skills (Stability, Locomotion, Throwing)

Inquiry : Connections

Writing : Recounts

The Arts: Collaborative Visual Art

That's it from me on a drizzly, grey afternoon. Time to read a book (or catch up on TV!) I think.

Nga mihi nui,

Andrea, Shelley and Deb

Week 1 is done!

Welcome to Teretere everyone! We have had a lovely week getting to know each other a bit more and we look forward to growing the relationships with the ākonga and whānau even more in the days to come.

Things to know:

  • Email replies- emails to any of us will be acknowledged within 24 hours, excluding weekends. Over weekends, we may reply but it is not guaranteed.

  • Weekly notices & Blog- each week on Fri/Sat (yes, I know I am late with this one-sorry!), our notices for the week will be published on our Teretere 2022 Blog, and a link emailed to you. There will also be photos from the week on the Blog for you to see what we have been up to.

  • Homework- our homework expectations are in line with the whole school ideal (check out a prior post from Claire about this on our school website). This simply means reading every day. Reading with your child, reading by your child, reading to your child. Any and all are terrific.

  • Library day- is Monday. Books are to be returned by the children to the boxes in class before Monday afternoon's visit please.

  • Sunhats and safety vests- are to be at school everyday and are not optional. So far, we have had a great turnout of both. Yay!! Vests are to be worn to and from school, let's be safe. :)

  • Toys- on the other hand are not to be brought to school, as they get lost, broken, distract children, cause arguments, etc. We will confirm which day 'news/sharing' day will be once decided.

  • Student details sheets- many of these were completed at the Meet the Teacher day. If not, it will come home in reading folders/school bags. It needs to be checked, updated if necessary, signed and returned to school please.

  • Learning in first weeks- is focussing on building relationships, learning routines, introduction of curriculum areas, setting expectations, etc. Reading books are not being sent home yet, as we need to do some up to date assessment first.

What have we been learning? In week 1 and 2, we are looking into Statistics in Maths, Sunsmart and Positive Learning Environments in Health and learning some new games in PE.

Have a great Waitangi Day on Monday- remember no school- and we'll see all the children on Tuesday. Of course, at Red, parent are no longer able to enter our classrooms.

Nga mihi nui,

Deb, Shelley and Andrea.
