Codes and Ciphers are ways of scrambling up words to make them impossible to understand. Julius Caesar a Roman soldier developed what is known as the Caesar Cipher to send letters to back to Rome when he was away fighting . In the Caesar Cipher each letter in the message is replaced by a letter 3 places further along. So A is replaced by D, C is replaced by F and so on. This is shown in the picture below
Instructions
1. Write your name using the Caesar cipher. Eg my name is Susan Rooney .This would be written as VXVDQ URRQHB
2. Write the name of your favourite book (or movie or TV show or game) using this cipher.
3. Try and decipher the last persons name and favourite book (or movie or TV show or game)
4. Optional; Tell us an interesting fact about Codes and Ciphers.
This Kahn Academy video is about the Caesar cipher.

As a digital tool, My Maps has great potential in terms of learning power. The linked activities are some ways to engage my students in exploring the world around them through rich mathematical tasks. All the activities can be done collaboratively.
This is ideal as an introductory activity for young students or students new to My Maps.
