Please review our Frequently Asked Questions below.
What hours is the Music Building open for practicing? We are open from 7:00 am - 11:30 pm daily for practice room usage. The music office is open from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, and the Music Library is open on Mondays/Wednesdays from 4:00-7:00 pm and Tuesdays/Thursdays/Fridays from 12:00-4:00 pm.
What hours are classrooms available to rehearse? Pending availability, classrooms remain open after music courses have finished until 11:30 pm - no exceptions. At this time, the classrooms are closed so that they may be cleaned and set up for the next day's classes and rehearsals.
How does one get access to the practice rooms? If you are enrolled in any music course (or a Music Major or Minor) during each semester, you may have access. Take your APU ID Number to the COTA Office (Dean's Suite 100) to be scanned, and in a few days, you will have card swipe access to the upstairs practice rooms as well as the back door of the Warren Music Building. The practice rooms doors are not allowed to be propped open at any time. If you forget your ID Card, you will need to return home to retrieve it.
How does one get access to the classrooms? Please refer to the Student Handbook under Classroom and Practice Room Usage Policy.
What is the food/drink policy? Other than bottled water or beverages with lids, there is to be no food or drink in the School of Music practice rooms at any time. Bottled water and beverages with lids are permissible, but are prohibited atop pianos, electronic equipment, or School of Music property. Please use caution and care so as to preserve the life of music property. Anyone found in violation of this policy may be asked to leave and any food or drink will be confiscated.
May we prop open any doors in the music building? No, we provide electronic access to the back door and to the practice rooms to all who qualify, and for classrooms to those who check in with the Music Assistants each evening. That said, there is no need to prop open doors except in the case of active loading/unloading for School of Music events and classes. This policy is designed to not only protect music equipment, but to protect you from danger brought by unwanted visitors. Please close doors behind you as you enter and leave the building.
I found a classroom door unlocked and empty, may I use it then? No. You may reserve a room as described earlier, but students are not allowed to let themselves into any classroom – even if the door is left unlocked. We have made access to the classrooms a simple process and it is granted on a one-time basis through Johnnie Aguilera or by the Music Assistants. Please be sure to properly reserve the classroom in order to keep the privilege of practicing in that space in the future.
May non-APU guests rehearse with me? Yes. You may have guests rehearse with you in the practice rooms for music-related functions only. The School of Music does not allow visitors to the practice rooms unless they are 1) accompanied by someone with access privileges, and 2) actively rehearsing with you. A similar rule applies to the classrooms; however, just like School of Music students, any guest must surrender their I.D. card to the Music Assistants before receiving access.
I was asked to leave by a Music Assistant…do they have the authority to do so? Yes. The School of Music has hired a very capable team of Music Assistants to provide access to the building after hours, to monitor activity in the building, and to maintain a vigilant eye for safety reasons. They have been instructed to enforce School of Music policies during their shift, thus, if you are not in compliance with any policy, you may be asked to leave. Please respect these employees of the School of Music. They are here to provide a service to you during your time here at Azusa Pacific University.
Where can I check my Performance Forum attendance? You can check with Professor Magrinelli-Rocha, the instructor of this course.
How do I find out where to locate my instructor? The best way to find out where your instructor is, is to set up a meeting with them by e-mail. If they aren't in their office, they are teaching!
What do I do if my instructor is not responding to my e-mail? The best thing to do is to give your instructor a fair amount of time to respond to your e-mail (more than 24 hours!). If they still haven't responded to your e-mail after a couple of days, you can send them a follow-up e-mail.
Who do I go to if I want to post a flyer in the School of Music? Please see Arturo Cabrera in Room 114 to receive approval for your flyer.
