Mentos candy
A bottle of soda pop
paper and tape
Do this OUTSIDE
Create a tube with the paper and tape and fill it with Mentos candy stacked one on top of the other
Put the bottle of soda pop on the ground and open the top
Use a small piece of paper to keep the Mentos from dropping from the bottom of the tube too early and position the tube of Mentos right above the top of the soda pop bottle.
Slide the paper out and drop the Mentos all at once into the soda bottle
Step back quickly and watch the explosion commence!
Be sure to clean up and put away your items. Good scientists clean up after every experiment.
Surface Area: Mentos have lots of tiny pits on their surface. These pits are perfect spots for bubbles to form.
Gas Release: Pop contains a lot of dissolved carbon dioxide gas, which is what makes it fizzy. When you open a bottle, the gas starts escaping slowly. But when you drop Mentos into the pop, the gas escapes very quickly because it has lots of spots (on the Mentos) to form bubbles.
Speedy Reaction: When the Mentos hit the pop, bubbles form all at once on their pitted surfaces. This rapid creation of bubbles causes a foam explosion because it pushes all the liquid up and out of the bottle in an exciting fountain.
