empty plastic bottle
baking soda
dish soap
vinegar
food coloring
dirt & rocks, Legos, Play-Doh, etc., to build the volcano

What to Do
Create volcano mound using any material you choose and place the plastic bottle inside it. Note: it is best to do this outside, or if you are inside, cover and protect the surface you are working on.
Add about 3 spoonfuls of baking soda to the bottle
Add 1 spoonful of dish soap
Add a few drops of food coloring
Pour in about 3 ounces of vinegar and watch the explosion!
Be sure to clean up and put away your items. Good scientists clean up after every experiment.

A chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar creates carbon dioxide gas, building up pressure in the plastic bottle until it bubbles up and out!
